PREP ROUNDUP: St. Maries wins district baseball opener

ST. MARIES — Wyatt Holmes hit a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the first inning, Gabe Long and Riley Abell drove in three runs each and the fourth-seeded St. Maries Lumberjacks beat the fifth-seeded Priest River Spartans 13-6 in a loser-out game to open the 2A District 1-2 tournament at City Park on Friday.

Landen Holmes struck out six over four innings for St. Maries (10-13), which faces top-seeded Orofino on Monday at Orofino High.

Broden Collins had two hits and an RBI for Priest River, which finished 0-19.

RATHDRUM — Kyler Cooley finished 4 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Trojans, who added two runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh to beat the Hawks in an Inland Empire League game suspended by darkness on April 16 in the bottom of the fifth inning at Gorton Field with Post Falls up 8-0.

Senior Aidan Tomlinson finished two hits and two RBIs for Post Falls (12-9, 9-9 IEL), which will open the 5A Region 1 tournament at top-seeded Lake City on Monday at 4 p.m.

Lakeland (9-11, 4-10) faces Sandpoint in a 4A Region 1 loser-out game on Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Moscow School District Community Playfields, with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Moscow in a best-of-3 championship series starting later that day.

BONNERS FERRY — The Tigers, who clinched the top seed to the 3A District 1 tournament with a sweep of the Badgers on April 26, fell to the Badgers in the regular season finale for both at Bonners Ferry High.

Timberlake (10-9-1, 2-1 IML) will host Game 1 of the best-of-3 championship series on Wednesday.

Thomas Bateman drove in five runs, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning and Trey Bateman had four RBIs and four runs scored for Bonners Ferry (4-18, 1-2).

“Trey had a great day on the mound and at the plate,” Bonners Ferry coach Tom Turpin said. “I was proud of our approaches at the plate. We were swinging at good pitches and Trey was consistent as he normally is. We feel good about how we finished the season. Anything can happen in a three-game series.”

BONNERS FERRY — Junior Jesi Kitchen homered and drove in four runs, and the visiting Tigers wrapped up their fifth straight Intermountain League title, and 16th since 2005.

Kitchin hit a three-run inside-the-park homer in the second inning, and singled in a run in the fourth.

Acacia Pecor struck out eight, walked one and pitched a two-hitter for Timberlake (12-8, 2-0 IML).

“Jesi had a huge day at the plate for us,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “Acacia pitched well, and we played rock-solid defense.”

Ava Frederickson tripled and scored in the fourth inning for Bonners Ferry (4-13, 0-2).

The lone two softball-playing teams in the IML, Bonners Ferry will travel to Timberlake on Monday at 4 p.m. in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series for the 3A District 1 title. Game 2 is Wednesday, and Game 3, if necessary, is Thursday.

KELLOGG — The fourth-seeded Wildcats beat the fifth-seeded Spartans in the loser-out first round of the 2A District 1-2 tournament.

Kellogg will play at top-seeded Orofino on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a semifinal game.
