PREP ROUNDUP: Bracing for the run ahead

| May 3, 2024 1:30 AM

• TRACK AND FIELD

POST FALLS — On Oct. 19, returning a kickoff during the Trojans' final regular season game against Lake City High, Post Falls High senior Dylan Wolfe thought it was over.

No high school football playoffs in his final year, and it looked like track wasn’t going to happen either.

Wolfe was tackled awkwardly during the game and later discovered he’d completely torn the ACL and MCL in his right knee.

“It was in our last regular season game this year,” Wolfe said. “ And I had surgery on Nov. 13, so it’s been almost six months, but I’m getting there.”

Typically, the recovery time for that kind of injury can be anywhere from 8 to 10 months.

“My doctors told me there’s no way that you’re going to be running track this season,” Wolfe said. “But my physical therapist Dave (Andrews) believed in me. But my doctors told me, ‘I hate to break it to you, but you’re probably not going to run track.’ But I wanted to prove them wrong and that I could still run.”

Wolfe, who won the 100 and 200 meters at the 2023 District 1 All-Star Meet, went to physical therapy and immediately got back on track to compete.

“I really tackled PT and was there every day for four straight months,” Wolfe said. “I got back to what I love doing, and I’m proud to be back.”

Wolfe returned to competition in the Trojans’ first meet against Lakeland on April 9 for a dual between the schools.

“It’s been a month since I've come back,” Wolfe said. “Right now, it’s a confidence thing. And it sucks to be the kid with a brace on, and everyone’s looking at me like ‘Who’s this dweeb?’, but I’m just trying to conquer it like I did my PT.”

In Thursday’s District 1 All-Star Meet at Post Falls High, Wolfe, along with teammates Gio Carlino, Tallan McCracken and Cobe Cameron set a meet record in the 4x200-meter relay, finishing in 1 minute, 29.62 seconds, beating the previous mark set by Lake City in 2014 of 1:30.32.

“When I came back, even if I was on JV, I was happy to be back running,” Wolfe said. “Surprisingly, I’m on varsity and it’s a great feeling. It’s been a battle for sure and I’m aching sometimes, but it’s worth it.”

Wolfe, who also placed fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 400 on Thursday, competes with a metal brace, knee sleeve and has his knee taped to avoid injury.

“It’s definitely something I’ve had to get used to,” Wolfe said. “I’ve got pre-wrap, tape and the whole shebang down there. It’s hard, and I had to change my form a lot to get back. But I’m getting better each day.”

“Dave Andrews has done a great job of getting me back,” Wolfe added. “Dave was on the side of thinking I could run, but told me it was going to be hard. I told him that I wanted to show everyone that I could run and want to finish my senior year. I’m going to college for football and track, so I wanted to get something in before I leave.”

Wolfe signed to play football and run track in March at NAIA College of Idaho in Caldwell.

“College of Idaho told me they were all for it,” Wolfe said of competing in track and field this spring. “They told me they were all for it, but just be safe.”

St. Maries senior Alexzander Lambson leads the 2A classification in the discus with a throw of 159 feet, 9 inches.

As for Thursday's meet, which featured the top 16 times and marks in District 1 in each classification, Lambson won the discus with a season-best throw of 161-1.

“It’s an eye-opener to be in this meet,” Lambson said. “There’s a lot of guys that can throw further than me here. But being here, it can really help me prepare for how to adjust my throws at state and regionals.”

As for having the target on his back this year, Lambson knows it will be a challenge, no matter what happens.

“I’ve just got to stay focused,” Lambson said. “I’ve just gotta keep going for the stars and pushing on.”

Team scores were not kept.

Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Nathan Russell set a meet record in the boys 800-meter run, finishing in 1 minute, 54.64 seconds. The previous mark was held by Lake City’s John Coyle, who won in 1:57.33 in 2007.

Early in the meet, after the boys 4x200 relay, meet organizers inducted former Sandpoint High athletic director and track and field coach Dave DeMers, former Post Falls thrower Matt Wardell and former Priest River runner AshLee Rey into the meet’s Hall of Fame.
