Area athletes to take†football field Saturday

TWIN FALLS - Local high school and junior high football players will take the field today for the annual All-State 8-man football games, to be held at Canyon Ridge High.

Area players will compete on the East team in the high school game, and for Team Idaho in the eighth- and seventh-grade games.

The seventh-grade game will kick off at 9 a.m., followed by the high school game at noon and the eighth-grade game at 3 p.m.

The 11-man game was canceled this season due to the inability to secure coaches in time.

The games will be webcast at www.idahosports.com.

Zags to face Kansas State†at Battle in Seattle

SPOKANE - The Gonzaga Bulldogs men's basketball team will take on the Kansas State Wildcats in the 10th anniversary of the Battle in Seattle at KeyArena on Dec. 15, Idol Sports and Entertainment announced.

It is the third all-time meeting between the two teams, with Kansas State winning both. The teams last faced each other on Nov. 22, 2010, in the semifinal of the CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo., with the Wildcats winning 81-64. The first meeting came on March 22, 1994, in Manhattan, Kan., where Kansas State beat Gonzaga 66-64 in the second round of the postseason NIT tournament.

Bruce Weber, now coach at Kansas State, will be the first opposing coach to return for a Battle in Seattle game, having coached Illinois to a 73-61 win in 2010.

Tickets go on sale Sept. 17 at all Ticketmaster outlets. The exclusive pre-sale will begin on Sept. 10 through Spokane-area Ticketmaster outlets or by obtaining a special pre-sale code.

Porter just misses†qualifying for Junior Worlds

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Michael Porter of Coeur d'Alene High was the top local finisher in a qualifier for the Junior World tournament on Thursday at Tumwater Golf Course.

Porter shot a 75-71-146 to finish two strokes from qualifying for nationals. Derek Bayley (81-72-153) and Stephen Roller (80-73-153) also competed.

Frank Garber of Kirkland, Wash., won the tournament with a 72-66-138 to advance to the Junior Worlds tournament at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.
