Cd'A man dies in plane crash

A Coeur d'Alene man died Thursday when the plane he was piloting crashed in the Nez Perce/Clearwater National Forest.

Officials in Idaho County say the crash that killed Jahan Ashtiani, 48, occurred when a gust of wind hit the airplane as it was taking off from an airstrip near the Moose Creek Ranger Station. The force caused the plane to flip over, crash and catch fire.

Passenger Anthony DiPaolo of Evergreen, Colo. was flown to a Grangeville hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

Sheriff Doug Giddings says the men had been fishing in the Moose Creek area east of Grangeville and were trying to leave the area ahead of an expected thunderstorm Thursday afternoon.
