Cardinal men victorious in inaugural NWAC game

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Sam Dowd had a game-high 27 points and finished with five assists, leading North Idaho College to a 103-94 win over the Yakima Valley Yaks in its debut in the Northwest Athletic Conference on Saturday afternoon at Rolly Williams Court.

Markus Golder scored 25 points for NIC (13-1), which also got 20 points from Niko Bevens.

NIC’s basketball teams transitioned to the NWAC this season after more than four decades in the NJCAA.

NIC travels to Columbia Basin of Pasco, Wash., on Wednesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Whitney Meier scored 23 points, including 5 for 11 from beyond the 3-point line, for the Cardinals, who lost to the Yaks in their inaugural Northwest Athletic Conference East Region game at Rolly Williams Court.

Sammi Blodgett had 29 points, four assists and four steals for Yakima Valley (11-3, 2-0 NWAC), which has won three straight games. Sequoia Swan hit 4 of 8 3-pointers and added 18 points for the Yaks.

Cierra Dvorak had 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists for NIC (7-5), which plays at Columbia Basin on Wednesday.

“They really shot the ball well, right from the beginning,” NIC coach Chris Carlson said of YVC, which shot 47.8 percent from the floor to NIC’s 30.5 percent. “I thought Whitney and Cierra played fantastic, too. We just got behind and couldn’t get the corner on them.”
