Charter Academy principal: ‘We took immediate measures’

Print Article

A letter from Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy Principal Dan Nicklay was posted this morning on the school’s Facebook page. It is in response to news that Charter vice-principal Nichole Thiel is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old in Bonner County in December 2015 while Thiel was employed by the Lake Pend Oreille School District.

Nicklay wrote:

“In light of the recent news concerning our Vice Principal, Mrs. Thiel, I want to assure you that the Academy board and administration take our responsibility to our families seriously, and that we have taken all of the measures necessary to ensure the safety of our students while protecting the rights of our employee.

The unfortunate headline aside, it is important to note that the accusations are based on her employment before she came to the Academy. We did all due diligence during the hiring process, and were not made aware of anything that would have influenced our eventual hiring decision. It is also very important for you to know that we took immediate measures upon learning of the accusations.

I understand that some may feel blindsided by the revelation of this news, but we were advised by our attorney to remove Mrs. Thiel from the school setting and not share any details until and unless charges were officially filed. At this point, you know as much as we do.

Please know that we will continue to do everything we can to ensure the continued safety of our students.”
