Bayley finishes runner-up
at Washington Men’s Amateur
CLE ELUM, Wash. — Joe Highsmith of Lakewood, Wash. shot 1-under 70 in Thursday’s final round to win the 91st Washington State Men’s Amateur, held on the par-71 Tumble Creek Golf Club at the Suncadia Resort.
Lakeland High native and rising Washington State senior Derek Bayley finished second with a 67-71-69—207, two shots behind Highsmith. It is his second straight time he finished runner-up in the tournament. Last month, Bayley finished runner-up at the PNGA Men’s Amateur.
For Highsmith, the victory was something of sweet revenge. In last year’s championship, he began the final round with a 4-stroke lead but missed out of a playoff by one shot when he bogeyed the 18th hole.
Hayden Lake’s Reid Hatley finished with a 71-72-73—216.
Athol’s Schuette sets record
in Helena endurance race
Heidi Schuette of Athol won the women’s race and set an age-group record at a 53-mile endurance run last weekend near Helena, Mont.
Schuette’s time of 12:33:07 was both the top women’s time and a new record for the masters (age 40-49) category.
The 29th annual HURL Elkhorn Endurance Runs, held the first Saturday of August, include a 15-mile, 52K and 53-mile race in the Elkhorn Mountains southeast of Helena. Organizers said that even with perfect running conditions, the event’s rocky trails and 13,000-plus feet of elevation gain meant only 66 percent of entrants completed the difficult 53-mile run.
