Bayley finishes runner-up

at Washington Menís Amateur

CLE ELUM, Wash. ó Joe Highsmith of Lakewood, Wash. shot 1-under 70 in Thursdayís final round to win the 91st Washington State Menís Amateur, held on the par-71 Tumble Creek Golf Club at the Suncadia Resort.

Lakeland High native and rising Washington State senior Derek Bayley finished second with a 67-71-69ó207, two shots behind Highsmith. It is his second straight time he finished runner-up in the tournament. Last month, Bayley finished runner-up at the PNGA Menís Amateur.

For Highsmith, the victory was something of sweet revenge. In last yearís championship, he began the final round with a 4-stroke lead but missed out of a playoff by one shot when he bogeyed the 18th hole.

Hayden Lakeís Reid Hatley finished with a 71-72-73ó216.

Atholís Schuette sets record

in Helena endurance race

Heidi Schuette of Athol won the womenís race and set an age-group record at a 53-mile endurance run last weekend near Helena, Mont.

Schuetteís time of 12:33:07 was both the top womenís time and a new record for the masters (age 40-49) category.

The 29th annual HURL Elkhorn Endurance Runs, held the first Saturday of August, include a 15-mile, 52K and 53-mile race in the Elkhorn Mountains southeast of Helena. Organizers said that even with perfect running conditions, the eventís rocky trails and 13,000-plus feet of elevation gain meant only 66 percent of entrants completed the difficult 53-mile run.
