A Columbia man has been arrested for allegedly trying to steal a car from the Welcome Inn parking lot Sunday night, and another man who fired shots at the car as it was being driven away is also in custody.
Columbia police responded to the report of shots fired at the Welcome Inn on North Providence Road shortly after 7 p.m. The incident began when Matthew Benjamin Moore, 39, allegedly tried to steal a vehicle that was idling in the parking lot. As Moore was driving off, Michael Dwaun Shields, 38, fired shots at the car, police spokeswoman Bryana Larimer said.
While investigating the incident, police located the stolen vehicle, which was damaged by bullets, in the 700 block of Vandiver Drive. Moore was arrested in the area on suspicion of felony tampering in the first degree. Bond will be set by the court.
Shields was arrested at about 9 p.m. at the Welcome Inn on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, second-degree assault and armed criminal action. Larimer said the owner of the car being stolen knows Shields.
