The National Education Association continues to push its controversial social agendas. At its annual conference this July, there was a concerted effort to endorse same-sex marriage by NEA's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus.
The original amendment called for teacher union endorsement of homosexual "marriages," civil unions and homosexual adoptions in all 50 states. But the amendment was changed, and passed, to specify that the union's support for homosexual "marriages" and civil unions was limited to states where such unions are already legally recognized.
State NEA affiliates vary on this agenda.
Idaho teachers should ask where the Idaho Education Association stands on the amendment. Alabama actively opposed the controversial amendment, while in neighboring Washington, the Washington Education Association actively promotes the same-sex agenda. No matter what the state affiliate does, however, the teacher's NEA does advance this agenda nationwide.
Idaho officials, on the other hand, appear to respect parents' rights to inculcate their values. The Idaho House of Representatives passed a law requiring parental permission to join student clubs, prompted by what many believe was the establishment of gay student clubs.
The Coeur d'Alene School District allows parents to block student participation in clubs.
Matters of faith and personal choice should have no part in the activity of a true education association. These types of resolutions polarize teachers from each other and the public they serve.
They do nothing to benefit NEA members, the students in the classroom or the teaching community at large.
