A Kootenai County Sheriff's deputy monitors traffic at the access point to a homicide scene that was being processed by investigators Thursday morning on Hayden Creek Road.

Man found dead on Hayden Creek Road

HAYDEN -- The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a man on Hayden Creek Road early Thursday following a woman's report that she killed him after he raped and stabbed her.

Sheriff deputies responded to a 911 call from the woman just before 5 a.m.

"She had taken his vehicle to escape the scene and used his cell phone to call 911," said Capt. Ben Wolfinger. "I couldn't say whose knife was used to stab him. I know she fought with him and was able to jump in the vehicle and head down the road."

Deputies discovered the man's body about two miles down the dirt road from the nearest house. The woman's name is not being released because she is an alleged rape victim. The man's body was taken to Spokane for an autopsy. His name will not be released until his next of kin is notified.

The woman was treated and released from Kootenai Medical Center Thursday.

"I think she had cuts on her hands -- multiple cuts," Wolfinger said.

The vehicle has been impounded and it is unknown why the two were on the dirt road.

"We'll be getting a search warrant to search the vehicle. That still has to be processed," Wolfinger said. "We're just collecting information and putting pieces of the puzzle together."

The investigation is ongoing.

"There's still lots of forensic evidence that needs to go to the labs," Wolfinger said.

"It could be several weeks before the final picture comes into place. Our goal here is to do it right and make sure we have all the evidence processed appropriately."

Was it used for torture and sadist activities? She should have feared for her life, most women who are raped are killed,so they won't talk. "

Let them do their work.

" You don't think that paying attention to the media, actually reading comments from know-it-alls like you, and asking to speak with people is part of police work?

He deserves a payraise for reading the constant barrage of negative police comments from the likes of you in this newspaper, and actually posting here to get information. Do you think he's claravoyant, or there are enough police everywhere at once so that he doesn't need to speak with the community for information?

No matter what he does, you'll never recognize police work and praise them for their efforts. "

" The person who is addressing Sgt. Ken as "clueless," You can't be serious. Are you assuming that reading the paper is the only, or main, thing he is doing? You are a fool. The on line comments can be ONE tool to help him with his investigation. Whatever your issue is with law enforcement, you need some serious self examination. Life is not a 60 minute television drama. "

" Why is a COP on CDApress blog and not working? They are going to need a "LEVY" to be able to do their own back ground checks. Even though this information is already in their computers.

Don't worry people they are having a seat belt emphasis patrol. They done spent their money for that instead of back ground checks "

To the idiot who wrote wrote on May 16, 2008 2:40 PM:

" the post titled "to Sgt. Ken". And idiot is a courteous name for you. What exactly do you think (if indeed you think at all, which is certainly open to question) is involved in a thorough ivestigation? It is a tedious process of following up every possible lead and talking to many people to ascertain the facts. And past behavior is a component. So when the Sgt. saw the post below, he very correctly wanted to talk with the person involved. And what is your definition of "background work"? Let me spell it out for you....it consists of checking records and interviewing as many people as possible. Why is it that the most ignorant people have the biggest mouths. "

To sgt.Ken wrote on May 16, 2008 1:03 PM:

You can't even move to the country to raise your kids and to have peace of mind. I don't know why anyone would be out so early in the morning as it being freezing cold in a secluded area, but I would have done the same. Wolfinger and Watson aren't CEO's and the way they look they're not professional law enforcement officials!

Do you want a bunch of knuckleheads stopping you in their personal car and in street clothes? "

To why location wrote on May 9, 2008 2:04 PM:

" There may be more to the story as you suggest, but bad judgement (if indeed that is what happened) doesn't equate to permission to rape. An equally plausible scenario is that the victim was taken to this area. No matter...this piece of waste material will never rape again. Justice is served. "

Uniform..... wrote on May 9, 2008 1:58 PM:

" Jack, why is it of such importance to you that Capt. Wolfinger wear a uniform? It doesn't change his position, his ability, or his authority. (and for the record, I am not being sarcastic. I am truly curious why people keep bringing up Wolfinger's and Sheriff Watson's attire or the vehicles they drive. It doesn't change their ability to do their jobs) "

To Why Location wrote on May 9, 2008 1:41 PM:

" So are you telling me that if you go up to Hayden Creek and drink you desereve to raped?! Well I guess that wasn't the way it was in the 80's and it's a good thing or myself and a lot of people I know in those classes would have been asking to be raped. Just becaue you go out and have a few drinks with someone does not give them the right to rape you and if you are implying that they were drinking and sex went far then you have no idea what rape is about. It is violence and control that a rapist is looking for and he uses sex to get that. "

Why Location wrote on May 9, 2008 12:04 PM:

" Well, I'll tell you. Can you say there was probably drinking involved??? When I was in high school Hayden Creek and a little place we called the Junk Woods, now a development below Canfield MTN, was for the purpose of parties and underage drinking! I say there is so much more to this story! "

Kay wrote on May 9, 2008 11:19 AM:

Hmmm... wrote on May 9, 2008 10:07 AM:

" I agree that the information regarding this situation is minimal at best, however, it seems to me that it's not the writing to blame. I think it's more of a lack of information being released. KHQ, KXLY & the Spokesmanreview all have about the same type of article. Sure makes me curious though. Why would someone be up Hayden Creek off Triangle seven at four in the morning on a Thursday? And in May, no less... not hunting season, not camping season, not kegger season... sounds like it was poor planning on someone's part. Middle of the woods in the middle of the night with someone in a truck with no cell service? trouble waiting to happen. "
