BOISE -- Coeur d'Alene's Sam Lyons took fourth place in boys singles at the state 5A tennis tournament Saturday at Timberline High School.

Lyons fell into the consolation bracket during the first day of action Friday. He beat Jon Winterstein of Timberline Saturday morning 6-3, 6-2 to move to the consolation semifinals, where he powered to a 7-5, 6-2 win over Alec Marx of Boise.

Lyons took on Kenny Mitchell of Mountain View in the finals, losing to him in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 to finish fourth.

"Sam started off 0-3 in the first match today and reeled off six straight games," Viking boys coach Corey DeLeonard said. "The third match was three tough sets -- the kid (Mitchell) beat him yesterday in straight sets.

"We're happy with how he played, He's going on to Portland State, so it's not his last match ever."

Lyons defeated Isaac Creed of Skyline 6-3, 6-2 to remain active in the consolation bracket.

The Vikings' Bake Hintz fell out of the tournament after two straight losses, as did Lake City's Tim Wanless.

"Johnson had a great match against Lim," Timberwolves girls coach Robert Brunn said. "She was down 4-0 in the second before coming back, but she ran out of gas.

"I was really pleased with the way they played today."

Wampus Cat teams 2nd, 3rd at state

CALDWELL -- Clark Fork senior tennis players Mike Martin and Thomas McMahon posted a second-place finish Saturday at the 3A state tennis championships at Vallivue High School.

"They came out strong and beautiful, but they let up and Sugar Salem got right back in it," said Cats head coach Mary Jo Lambert. "They just didn't hang on to what they started out with. I'm disappointed the boys didn't win, I wanted it for them. They were pretty upset."

The Clark Fork girls doubles team of Chelsea Macumber and Shaina Gustafson rebounded to win their final two sets after losing in the semi-finals and finished third.

"We had to pull Chelsea out for a little bit, but they said they would not quit," said Lambert, noting Macumber was cramping in the brutally hot conditions and she considered calling the match. "They're going to be awesome. They just keep getting better and better."
