| MEAGAN THOMPSON/Special to The Press Sean Jackson digs in during the 4x200-meter relay for Lake City, which finished a close second in the 5A boys team race. |
Lake City boys an oh-so-close second in 5A; Lakeland girls fourth; Schalk, Reynolds, Price among individual champs
BOISE -- The Lake City boys held destiny in their hands going into the final race of the 2008 5A state track and field season Friday night at Ed Jacoby Track at Boise State University.
The Timberwolves, who had never brought home a trophy from the state meet, led by two points going into the 4x400-meter relay with a slight advantage over Capital (67), Eagle (65), and Borah (64), who were all within reach.
In a season that's been one big emotional rollercoaster ride, it basically went down like this. The Eagle anchor leg went to a sprinter's lean to edge the Centennial anchor leg to win the 4x400 with a time of 3 minutes, 20.90 seconds and the 5A boys state title. The Patriots were second with a time of 3:20.91. Lake City was fifth.
The ripple effect left Lake City with the second-place team trophy, two points back of Eagle, which won with a score of 75. Centennial and Capital finished in a deadlock for third with 67 points apiece.
"We missed winning the state title by 1/100th of a second. If Centennial would have won that relay instead of Eagle, we would have finished with 75 points," said Lake City coach Kelly Reed. "I'm ecstatic. Of course there's a bunch of woulda-coulda-sholuda's, but we've never brought home a trophy. I thought our guys competed on guts."
Camille Reynolds won the 300-meter hurdles in 46.27 to help the Lakeland girls finish fourth in the 4A meet. Rigby won it all with a team score of 126, followed by Mountain Home (90) and Jerome (71) and the Hawks had 62.
"This is a good time to be Hawk," Reynolds said. "Jake Price won the 400 state title right before me. Kristine Leonard won a shot put state championship (Thursday). It's just so special to have three state champions from this program."
The adrenaline was pumping, the opportunity was there for the taking, but Lake City just couldn't put the kill to the field when opportunity came knocking.
C.J. Helbling and John Coyle both led the 1,600 meters at one time or another. But Boise sophomore Eric Fitzpatrick, who defeated them both in the 3,200 on Thursday, fought through a pretty sound pace to win his second event in 4:21.06. Coyle took Fitzpatrick down the back straight away at break-neck speed, but couldn't hold on as the two came out of the final turn and headed toward the finish line.
Coyle spent it all trying to break Fitzpatrick, and Ryan Saunders of Capital of Boise slipped past him to finish second to steal a couple of big points. Coyle was third and Helbling fell off to seventh.
"Maybe I shouldn't have taken it out so hard and maybe I could have held on to finish higher," Helbling said. "I don't have a kick, so I was hoping to set it up early and try and pull away."
Coyle was visibly shaken after utilizing a race strategy that pushed him well beyond his limit.
"I didn't come through for the team," Coyle said. "I have no one to blame but myself. There's been a lot of guys that stepped up and made up for me. If we don't win it, I'm going to think about it for the rest of my life what could have been."
Coyle's bid to repeat as the 5A 800 champion was upended when he came off the curve in a dead heat with Richard Bounds of Centennial. Coyle tried to surge in the final 100 meters, but Bounds held him off down the stretch to win the 800-meter title in 1:56.59.
Coyle was second in 1:57.59 and Lake City junior Logan Frederickson was sixth with a time of 1:58.84.
Lake City junior Tanner Schalk won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 39.46 seconds and finished third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.32.
Reynolds defeated the girls 4A 300-meter hurdle field in 46.27, pulling away from Emily Moranda of Mountain Home (47.53) and McKinzie Anderson of Rigby (47.65), who finished second and third, respectively.
"This is so amazing. It's my first year running the 300s and I wondered if I'd even make it to state," the Lakeland junior said. "I can't even describe what it feels like to win a state title and break a school record. (Emily) Moranda was the defending state champion and I knew she would be there in the end. I still can't believe it."
Reynolds also ran a leg on the Lakeland state champion 4x400 relay, which also included Kari Rucker, Blythe Jones and Latecia Howell.
Price and Anthony Williams from Moscow have been racing each other all season. On Friday, they showed the state what's what in the boys 4A 400 meters. Price broke the stagger by the back straightaway, but Williams stayed with him as best he could, giving the Inland Empire League a 1-2 finish.
The Price was right with a time of 50.70 and Williams was second in 51.23.
"I try to make up the stagger by the 200. I think it makes a lot of people nervous when they see a guy coming out of lane 4 to the front," said Price, who broke the school record of 50.80 with his state-winning time of 50.70. "I was nervous with this being my last year, but I just went for it."
Williams just shook his head and smiled.
"Jake and I have raced a lot," the Moscow senior said. "He went blowing by me early and by time I figured it out, he was gone.
"It does strange things to you mentally when he breaks the stagger like that."
Moscow won the 4A boys meet by a point over Jerome 75-74. Columbia was third with 71.
Coeur d'Alene freshman Kinsey Gomez's bid for her first state title on the track didn't fall into place. Nicole Nielsen from Borah, who won the 3,200 on Thursday, doubled with a win in the 1,600 with a time of 5:05.30. Gomez was second in 5:13.46.
Borah won the 5A girls title with 131 1/2 points. Centennial was a distant second with 60 and Timberline of Boise was third at 47 1/2.
In other 5A action, the Coeur d'Alene girls 4x100-meter relay finished third in a very competitive field. Meridian held off Timberline to win in 49.34. Timberline was second with 49.55 and the Vikings were third at 50.46.
The Lake City girls 4x200 relay finished fourth with a time of 1:47.51.
Post Falls sophomore Kacie Shields finished fifth in the girls 100-meter hurdles in 15.86 and Lake City's Tiffany Kuehn was sixth in 16.5.
The Lake City girls 4x200-meter relay was fourth with a time of 1:47.51 and the Timberwolf boys were fifth in 1:30.99.
In 4A action, the Lakeland girls 4x200-meter relay finished third with a time of 1:46.18.
