ELECTION: The Obama Delusion

It's saddening and maddening to see so many Americans willing to elect a man who, more than any presidential candidate in history, stands for a complete reversal of the incomparable American values of self-responsibility and individualism. The media acts as an arm of Obama's election campaign and has brazenly dropped any pretense of journalistic integrity.

Ordinarily, the past of a man like this would disqualify him from the most basic security clearances, yet the media says nothing as he struts arrogantly toward the White House and the most important job in the world. His past is not irrelevant and it's not racist to make it an issue. The leader of a country will naturally attempt to reshape that nation into the image of his values. The history and background of a person are instrumental in shaping that person's values. Therefore, the scrutiny of a presidential candidate's past is essential in determining what he or she has in store for America.

Obama's past speaks volumes. He has spent his entire adult life as a far-left activist, sympathized with the racist ideology of black separatism, openly expressed Marxist views, was, until a few years ago, a candidate for Chicago's openly socialist New Party, was for 20 years friends with, and attended the sermons of, a pastor who spews the most vile anti-American and anti-white hate imaginable, worked and raised money for a left wing organization (ACORN) whose violent activism coerced banks into giving many of the sub-prime loans which now threaten the world's economy and who are now engaged in some of the worst election fraud in U.S. history, was recently filmed telling a meeting of ACORN leaders that once he is elected he will allow them to shape his agenda for America, was friends with an anti-American Marxist terrorist whose criminal group bombed and killed innocent people, worked with this man on a project to radicalize Chicago's schools so that kids were taught left-wing propaganda instead of marketable skills they could use to get jobs, campaigned for a Marxist Kenyan (his cousin, Odinga), who later incited his goons to commit genocide and burn women and children alive. The list just goes on and on and on.

Maybe it's all a big coincidence, but we'll never know because the media has refused to look into any of it and has instead poured all of its resources into investigating the background of an innocent working class plumber who dared to question Obama's socialist agenda in front of TV cameras. The conduct of the media throughout this campaign is possibly the broadest and most damaging war that U.S. journalism has ever waged upon the American public.

Obama is, without a shadow of a doubt, the worst presidential candidate in US history and the fact that assorted Socialists and dictators over the world endorse his candidacy is scary. Without the omnipresent support of the media and the war chest he has amassed would he really stand a chance? If he were treated as Republicans are by the media he would be late night fodder for comedians having already been exposed for his associations, frequent misstatements and ridiculous ideas.

Obama's tax plan will spell disaster for the U.S. economy, although it will promote income equality; equality of misery. Like most Socialists, he fails to understand that you cannot raise the standard of living of the poor without economic growth, and that you do not create economic growth by spreading wealth around. You have to create more. Unfortunately, Obama seems to have his heart set on instigating revenge on capitalism in the form of higher taxes on big business, the very sector which drives the U.S. economy and whose economies of scale mean lower prices for the consumer. They'll get back their money by raising their prices, which means Americans will have fewer dollars to spend on the kinds of things that smaller businesses provide -- resulting in more small businesses folding or downgrading. You do not raise taxes on the most productive during a recession. This economic truism has been ignored by Obama, who instead wins support from a populace drugged by the propaganda of the media into thinking that the most productive should share their wealth instead of using it as capital to create more, thus benefiting everyone. This is the equivalent of stealing corn seed from the farmer to feed the villagers. I have never feared for America as I do now. Apparently, we have become desperate people. The far left, which belongs in the dust bins of history, may be about to seize power of the most powerful nation in the world. They will destroy it and God knows what else.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcement official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the United States.

The AP could not reach Onyango immediately for comment. No one answered the telephone number listed in her name late Friday. It was unclear why her request for asylum was rejected in 2004. The Obama campaign declined to comment late Friday night.

Onyango is not a relative whom Obama has discussed in campaign appearances and, unlike Obama's father and grandmother, is not someone who has been part of the public discussion about his personal life.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Kelly Nantel, said the government does not comment on an individual's citizenship status or immigration case.

Onyango's case - coming to light just days before the presidential election - led to an unusual nationwide directive within Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requiring any deportations prior to Tuesday's election to be approved at least at the level of ICE regional directors, the U.S. law enforcement official told the AP.

The unusual directive suggests that the Bush administration is sensitive to the political implications of Onyango's case coming to light so close to the election.

Actually, democratic socialism is working quite well in Sweden and Great Britain, just to name a couple of places. The Swedes are beating the pants off of us in terms of life expectancy, income parity, and general happiness (as measured by survey).

Little known about man who has sent thousands to GOP

Big campaign donors typically come with deep pockets and influence. But in Illinois this election cycle, no one not running for office himself has given more to the nation's federal campaigns than Shi Sheng Hao of Roselle, a virtual unknown in business and political circles.

Before September 2007, Hao's name had never appeared in the 15yr old federal database of campaign contributors. Since then, however, his donations have topped $120,000 including $70,100 on a single June day to Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Over the same time frame, a network of Hao relatives has kicked in more. The take from this group over the last 13 months exceeds $269,000, a small amount to Democrats but most of it to McCain and the Republican National Committee, records show.

Hao didn't register to vote at the northwest suburban address attached to his donations until October 2007, a month after he wrote his first political check, $25,000 to the RNC.

The circumstances surrounding Hao's sudden and prolific political activism are curious and his whereabouts unclear. His name isn't listed on property records or the mailbox at the unassuming tract home listed on his donations. Hao lives "overseas," insisted a man who answered the door at the Roselle home recently. The man declined to identify himself.

The story of Haowhose varied roster of business associates appears to include a Taiwanese government investment arm as well as the mastermind of a decade-old Democratic fundraising scandal is an eyebrow-raiser in the current election climate.

Ethnic Chinese donors became an issue in the battle for the Democratic nomination last year because some didn't seem to live where they claimed on contribution records. Now, Republicans are raising questions about the authenticity of many small donations Democrat Barack Obama has received from abroad.

Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Washington-based Center for Responsive Politics, said the timing of the Hao-related contributions appeared troubling, though there could be a plausible explanation. "Large contributions from people who have never given previously do generally provoke questions about who they are and what they're up to, and most importantly, what they're looking for," said Krumholz, whose non-partisan group closely tracks political donations. "The public needs to be concerned because there are fraudulent donations, and persons use them to gain influence and access in Washington."

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said Hao was not a "major donor" and "not a part of this campaign in terms of fundraising," but declined to discuss him further or address the campaign's procedures for vetting donors. RNC spokesman Danny Diaz said he would not respond to questions from the Tribune, contending that the newspaper was biased against McCain.

So who is Shi Sheng Hao, and what are his means and motives for becoming a mega-donor? No one answers a telephone listed in his name in the 630 area code, and there's no answering machine. Messages left for him by phone and e-mail with several relatives went unanswered.

But this much can be gleaned from public records:

Donation disclosures list his occupation as a businessman with entities identified only by slightly different acronyms: ADECC, AAEC, A.A.E.C.C. On some he is also listed as president of American Chinese Entertainment Ltd.

Hao and his wife, Hsin-Ning, declared bankruptcy in 1995, at the time using the Roselle home as an address and listing as a business a firm called Asian American Environmental Control.

Hao holds an Illinois driver's license that lists his address as the Roselle home, but property records show the four-bedroom house has been owned since 1992 by Robert and Jen Chi, and their last name is on the mailbox. Contacted at the Des Plaines marketing firm where she works, Jen Chi said she didn't want to discuss Hao, though she said she knew how to get in touch with him and would have him call the Tribune. He never did.

"I don't know anything about his business," said Chi, who herself gave $15,000 to the RNC the week after Hao's first donation. "I don't want to be stuck in the middle." Hao's wife, Hsin-Ning, also used the Roselle address when she made a $25,000 contribution to the RNC last year. In September, however, she listed a Taipei address on a $2,300 contribution to the campaign fund of former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

There is no record in business databases of American Chinese Entertainment Ltd., the firm listed in some Hao donation records. However, an Asian American Entertainment Corp. was incorporated early this year in California with a Shi Sheng Hao as president. Government records show that firm and at least two other Hao companies have connections to the family of Gene and Nora Lum, onetime prominent Democratic fundraisers in the Asian-American community who were convicted in 1997 of making political donations through illegal straw donors. A Taiwanese firm with a nearly identical name as Hao's new California company, Asian American Entertainment Ltd., is also headed by a Shi Sheng Hao. That firm has been embroiled in a lengthy legal battle in Las Vegas over a soured partnership in an application for a casino license in Macau, the former Portuguese colony now part of China.

Court filing in that case described Hao's firm as a business affiliate of the China Industrial Development Bank, a finance arm of the Taiwanese government. Hao is listed as a resident of Taiwan in corporate papers filed in the case.

It is not clear whether the Shi Sheng Hao in the lawsuit and the California ventures is the same Shi Sheng Hao using the Roselle address. But public records point to numerous coincidences, including corporations with similar names and an overlap of investors. Some political donations from the Roselle address also refer to Hao by a nickname, Marshall, the same nickname given for Hao in the Las Vegas court action. "

On May 10, 2008 The Times reported, Robert Malley advisor to Obama was 'sacked' after the press found out he was having regular contacts with 'Hamas', which controls Gaza and is connected with and backed by Iran. This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama's visit to Iraq, he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will 'Take care of things'.

Wherever John McCain appears on the stump in these waning days of the presidential campaign, he is always accompanied by his imaginary friend Joe the Plumber, but it is the specter of Karl Marx that lurks just offstage.

Reverting to the Republicanism of eons ago, when he was just a child, McCain inveighs against the socialist design of Barack Obamas tax platform. This delusional ranting, like so much of his behavior this year, tells us nothing about Obama (or socialism!) but much about the Republican senator.

Lets begin with the dishonesty of the McCain rant. What Obama proposes is to restore tax rates on the wealthy to the same level as during the Clinton administrationthat is, to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire without renewing them for individuals and families reporting more than $250,000 in annual income. There is nothing radical in this idea, let alone socialistic (especially compared with the violations of capitalist orthodoxy that McCain has supported recently as emergency measures to rescue the financial industry).

Not only is there nothing radical about repairing the unfairness of the Bush tax cuts, but it is precisely the same position that McCain argued when they were first enacted. Is his memory so poor that he cannot remember saying the Bush tax plan was skewed to benefit the rich? Having reversed that position for political convenience, he has also invented a different justification for opposing Bush back thennamely that he thought the cuts were fiscally irresponsible. But that isnt what he said in 2000 and 2001.

Now lets address the ignorance of his rant. Progressive taxation is a tradition of Western economics that dates back considerably further than Marx and the Communist manifesto, with all due respect to the wingnuts who seem to be writing McCains speeches. He admits that he has neglected his economic studies, so perhaps he isnt aware that Adam Smith, revered philosopher of market capitalism, advocated tax fairness as far back as 1776, the fateful year when he published the first edition of The Wealth of Nations.

Although there was then no income tax, Smiths principled judgment on the justice of higher taxes on those who could pay more, enunciated on several occasions, could not be clearer. He favored property taxes and luxury taxes because they would fall most heavily on the wealthy. He would have levied a sizable tax on all seven of the McCain homes plus an additional chop at all of Cindy McCains credit card binges.

In Wealth of Nations, Smith wrote: The subjects of every state ought to contribute towards the support of the government, as nearly as possible, in proportion to their respective abilities; that is, in proportion to the revenue which they respectively enjoy under the protection of the state.

Few legislators are more familiar than McCain, in his maverick incarnation, with the enormous fortunes raked in by oilmen, defense contractors, bond holders and the whole host of modern capitalists under the protection of the American state. The notion that those fortunes, often gotten in a parody of the free market, should be taxed at the same rate as the earnings of a plumber would strike Smith as monumentally unjust and an attack on the moral foundations of society.

Finally, lets discuss the other bit of demagoguery in McCains most recent speeches, when he complains about the redistribution of wealth and equates an income tax rebate for working people with welfare. Leaving aside the racial subtext of those remarks, it is hard to say whether they display ignorance, dishonesty or both. The American tax system, like all other taxation in modern nations, has always redistributed wealth. Sometimes it sends streams of money upward, from low-income taxpayers into the pockets of corporate executives; at other times it sends those streams downward, to assist the very poor.

But to cast socialist aspersions on a tax refund to working families whose incomes are too low to pay income taxes is to paint a big pink stripe onto McCains supposed idol, Ronald Reagan. In 1986, Reagan signed legislation greatly increasing the earned income tax credit, a credit for low-income workers that reduces the impact of payroll taxes in order to boost take-home pay above poverty levels. When the credit is more than the amount of federal income taxes owed by an individual, that person receives a tax refund. Reagan praised the earned income tax credit as the best anti-poverty and pro-family legislation ever enacted by Congress.

It must be troubling for Republicans to learn that according to McCain, the Gipper was a socialist, too. "

That's what I wondered when George Packer (ace of the New Yorker) asked whether he could post my intention to vote for Obama on his blog.

So I duly ignored him. Only when he bugged me two days later did I say okay, and responded in quick, instinctive emails back.

Little did I know the splash this would make. Not until a day later, when my wife and I were up in Philadelphia to teach leadership via scenes from Shakespeare's Henry V for the Wharton Business School. When friends joined us for dinner at UPenn, they said their taxi driver had talked about my "endorsement of Obama," having read it online during a break.

What's most fun about unexpectedly "breaking through" on an issue is not feeling powerful, that you're molding minds out there. People make up their own minds, based on lots more information than my personal inclinations.

Okay, this type announcement can give (maybe a few) conservatives some cover -- not publicly to use with others, but privately to assure themselves that it's actually okay to break away. To break with the most conservative, or Republican, candidate and vote (in my case, the first time ever) for "the other guy."

And it's not most fun dealing with longtime friends, fellow conservatives. Most are polite and say they understand, and they'll get over it. Yet a few do get heated, show their disappointment, and say they can't understand my taking a public stance (even if I privately stray).

I don't enjoy those discussions, since I've long prided myself in being a staunch conservative.

Not a neo-con, since I was never liberal along the way (having campaigned for Barry Goldwater in 1964, when at that hotbed of lefty politics, Grinnell College). I'm really a con-con.

And not a staunch Republican, as I've never been to a Republican rally or convention (I came closest in 1980, after writing Don Rumsfeld's speech and after we drove there; but I left Detroit before the convention opened).

So I've considered myself less of a partisan than an ideologue. I cared about conservative principles, and still do, instead of caring about the GOP.

Granted, McCain's views are closer to mine than Obama's. But I've learned over this Bush era to value competence along with ideology. Otherwise, our ideology gets discredited, as it has so disastrously over the past eight years.

McCain's temperament -- leading him to bizarre behavior during the week the economic crisis broke -- and his judgment -- leading him to Wasilla -- depressed me into thinking that "our guy" would be a(nother) lousy conservative president. Been there, done that.

I'd rather a competent moderate president. Even at a risk, since Obama lacks lots of executive experience displaying competence (though his presidential campaign has been spot-on). And since his Senate voting record is not moderate, but depressingly liberal. Looming in the background, Pelosi and Reid really scare me.

Nonetheless, I concluded that McCain would not -- could not -- be a good president. Obama just might be.

That's become good enough for me -- however much of a triumph (as Dr. Johnson said about second marriages) of hope over experience.

Now what's most fun about the media breakthrough is hearing from gobs of people from previous lives. Many long forgotten, reminding me of long forgotten times together. People emerging suddenly, from the dark matter of time, into the recesses of the brain.

These folks were important at various stages of my life -- grammar school playmates, Grinnell classmates, Indianapolis cousins, Dan Quayle, Di-ck Allen, colleagues from the Reagan arms control agency (chuckling over my quip to Packer that I wouldn't have hired Sarah Palin to a mid-level job there).

A veritable stroll down memory lane, to see a line of people who have touched my life at various times, in its varied stages, reconnecting in a most unexpected (even bizarre) manner.

Now that's fun. "

" The Obama, Rezko home purchase deal is again being examined. To review, the Obama's purchased a home in Chicago in 2005. It was listed for $1.95 million dollars and stipulated that an adjacent $650K vacant lot MUST be purchased simultaneously. The Obama's employed the wife of their close friend (and now convicted felon) Tony Rezko as their real estate agent.

The cozy deal they worked out went as follows: The Obama's purchased just the home for $1.625 million, a 15% discount from the asking price and Tony Rezko bought the adjacent lot for $625K, nearly full price. Then, a few months later Tony Rezko sold Obama a section of that lot for only $104K so he could "have a side yard".

Keep in mind that the Obama's are both Harvard trainde lawyers and Rezko is a land developer. They knew and understood the laws of their state and land laws in particular.

Here's the cute part of the deal. Chicago, just like CdA, has building requirements for vacant land called set-backs. A set-back is how much vacant land must be allowed between a structure and it's lot line. When Rezko cut off that portion of land from his lot to sell to Obama he intentionally made his own lot unbuildable. Nothing could ever be built on what remained of Rezko's lot because it was too small to meet Chicago's set-back requirements.

The end result is this. The Obama's got their home and now live next door to a lot that will always remain open and they just happen to maintain it as an extension of their own property. Essentially Rezko gifted the lot to the Obama's. They got their $1.65 million dollar home AND the use of the $625K lot next to it for about $1.5 million. That's a $700K dollar discount and they do not have to pay for the property taxes on Rezko's lot ever.

Some say that is all coincidental and that Obama has nothing in the lot and will not make any money when it sells, which is factual but not totally honest. The value of Rezkos lot is now next to nothing. It is zoned residential but no residence can be built on it. But, when the Obama's go to sell their home they can tout the use of that lot and that their property will always be sizable. The use value of the Obama property went up while Rezkos property is worthless.

Rezkos is going to federal prison and fools want to elect this corrupt, snaky politician Obama to run our country. They think Obama will end corruption? Yeah, right. "
