COEUR d'ALENE -- After the last of the polls closed, the place went crazy.

And when Sen. Barack Obama came out for his presidential acceptance speech a little later, the more than 300 Democratic supporters crammed shoulder-to-shoulder around the dozen-plus televisions inside Cricket's Bar and Grill Tuesday night went crazy again.

"It's incredible," said Jerry Middel, in the middle of a sea of people. "This brings a lot of faith back in the United States that we can really transcend the politics of the last eight years."

For most people around Coeur d'Alene, Tuesday night's presidential election was nothing short of historic. Hundreds of Democratic supporters filled the downtown restaurant and Barrel Room No. 6 across Sherman Avenue to watch the results pour in for their candidate's landslide victory, erupting in cheers and hugs shortly after the western polls closed and Obama was awarded the presidency.

The event was spearheaded by the Kootenai County Democratic Party, which helped organize the same party three months ago to watch Obama speak at the Democratic National Convention. This time around, the crowd was even more jubilant than in August, and for some, the whole spectacle was too good to be true.

"I've asked a number of people to pinch me because I thought I was dreaming," 56-year-old Hilary Chick said.

Dressed in her blue Obama T-shirt and wedged between other supporters near the front bar, she said she wasn't certain she could trust the polling numbers leading up to the vote.

"There were a lot of questions still in my mind if people would follow through on what they were saying" about which way they would vote, she said.

"I just hope and pray he can stay safe now," she added.

Inside the bar, Obama's victory stirred many deep emotions for different people.

Henry Bills couldn't help but think about his childhood back in rural Arkansas when he heard the announcement on his car radio while driving to Crickets from the poll at which he volunteered.

The 65-year-old African American remembered drinking from separate fountains, riding in the back of the bus and eating at the back of restaurants.

"It's a historical day," he said from the back of the bar, his eyes glossy with emotion. "To see that America has come this far in my lifetime: I'm jubilant now, but I know I don't have the full effect of what this means, for my grandkids, my children.

"I hope that my kids have more children so I can tell more grandchildren about this," he said.

North Idaho College student Austin Folnagy hopes the election turns the apathetic perception, which has dogged his generation, on its ear.

"We've shown here that we've changed all that," he boomed beside the front double doors. "There were numerous young people who went out there and voted in this election. This is a big part of producing the new history of how this generation is perceived.

"This generation is a color-blind generation," he added.

Across town, Kootenai County Republicans watched the same event unfold at the Best Western Coeur d'Alene Inn on Appleway Avenue.

The mood didn't match its cross-town counterpart, as the Democratic victory seemed certain early on.

"Oh no," Phil Thompson said, watching the large television in the Sherman Room. "(Obama's) winning Montana!"

"It doesn't ruin the evening," JoAnn Jackson said. "I just hope somebody brings unity to the country and we can focus on what needs to be taken care of, regardless of the party, just take care of making our country the great nation it should be.

"It was history in the making, regardless of which party you followed. It was really a neat thing to watch. A lot of progress going on and I'm happy to see that."

Republican faithful will still have a lot to celebrate with results of the local races, nearby Barb Bradley said.

But the national race couldn't go unnoticed. Dozens of Republican supporters watched stoically as the race was called.

"Just look at those faces," Bradley said.

Back at Cricket's, the party was just picking up. A buzz had begun circling the bar by 7 p.m., and as the clock inched closer to 8 p.m., the crowd counted down the last few seconds before the rest of the polls closed, erupting in cheers and hugs seconds later when Obama was declared the 44th President of the United States.

They applauded parts of Sen. John McCain's concession speech, then quieted down waiting for Obama to speak. When he did, an ovation filled the bar. Waitress stopped, leaning on each other to watch.

"I got to go," Bills said, shuffling from the back of the bar to a nearby television. "Obama is speaking and I'm not going to miss this."

The newspaper industry is tanking right now because a lot of journalists are liberals that want to 'change the world.' I know, I was a college editor. The Spokesman and the NY Times are bleeding red and laying people off in droves because they mock and belittle conservatives/non-liberals and then wonder why their subscriptions and advertising are going down.
Just something to ponder. "

" Hi Carrie... The reality is that Obama has won the election. He won the election because he has promised a great many things to a great many people and they believed him. Nobody thought to ask Obama how he was going to make all of the things he promised happen prior to voting him in. All Obama said was that he was going to tax the rich (over $250K) to pay for everything. Well Obama won.

So when does Obama start to really perform? Certainly not immediately. In his 1st year, 2nd, 3rd...when will he make any progress, or be expected to? Will he get the taxing part down but not those programs he promised the voters? Will he manage to help the corporations who sponsored his campaign before he gets those tax break out to the little people?

Obama got the job he was eminently unqualified for because he SAID he could do it. I expect that he will do it in exactly the pristine fashion he promised he would. He would not have lied to his followers now would he? I want my tax break, my boys to attend college for free and my grandkids to get free healthcare. Thank God I do not make more than $250K. "

Mahiun wrote on Nov 6, 2008 8:42 AM:

" In this country, there is no such thing as a national election for President. Instead, we hold a series of state elections --- and even then, you're not really voting for President, you're voting for the people who will then elect the President. Technically, the President is not actually elected until January 9th, when the Electoral College meets and submits the official vote tally.

In most states, it's "winner take all", so even if John Q. Candidate only gets 1 more vote than Jane Q. Incumbent, all of the state's electoral votes will go to John, not Jane. Some (only a couple) of states apportion electoral votes according to the % of the popular vote in the state, but the vast majority use the "winner take all" system.

A state is assigned as many electoral votes as it has members of Congress, so no state will every have fewer than 3 electoral votes. That's why 270 electoral votes are needed to cinch the Presidency: that's more than half of the total of 538, so the other side could not possibly muster enough to defeat the one with 270 or more.

Is the Electoral College obsolete? Almost any modern student of politics will say so. In a day and age of nearly instantaneous communications and mobility, clinging to this rural-based 18th-century system is......well......."quaint" might be the kindest term. But don't look for it to change any time soon; there have been lots of attempts to do so, and they've all failed, mostly because of intense lobbying from small-population states like Idaho. The Electoral College system does have a small, but significant and deliberate, bias in favour of states with smaller populations --- their influence on the process is actually out of proportion to their populations. They are not likely to give that up willingly. "

The real reason that McCain (who I'm very mad at) lost was because of three main reasons: #1 Should have been pointing out the facts on how he will save and protect America, like Reagan did; #2 His horrible choice of Sarah instead of Mitt Romney who was the ace in the hole to fix the economy and #3 He should have taken the Maverick stance and gone against the bailout of $700 billion. Those three things would have endeared him to his base, Reagan Democrats and most of the independants. He was a "gentleman loser" but who cares if your a gentleman when your country is at stake? Well be happy with them). You can stem-cell research your own dead babies- darwin would be happy. Best beahes? If you like crowds and oily sand filled with used syringes. You get WorldCom.

Hahaha. Great! I wasnt aware anyone wanted Microsoft. If apple went out of business microlimp would be gone in 3 years. Intel is perched to outsource the minute Obama gets his tax increases thru---probably to the red states!

We get Harvard, MIT, Yale, NorthWestern.
You get midwestrm colleges.

What?! Harvard and Yale? Isnt the current President a graduate of those universities? Having hired and worked with both ivy league and midwest land grant university grads, Ill go with the midwesterners 100% of the time.

We get two-thirds of the tax revenue,
you get to make the red states pay their fair share.

Very Good! Actually, youll get 100% of your own tax revenue but , being liberal, youll spend 25% MORE on useless govt social programs. The Red states will get 100% of their own revenue, balance their budgets, let workers keep more of their own money and put felons back to hard labor.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22% lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families.
You get a bunch of single moms.

22%? Why not 21.356% or 31.43% or some other % pulled directly from the liberal nether regions? The fact of the matter is that there are single moms everywhere because the liberal courts and media have made it more acceptable. The only difference is that red state moms tend to be far less tattooed, pierced and diseased that blue state hotties.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be...blah, blah,.. and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not blah..

Get ready! The wmds will turn up in a blue state port. Hope its on the east coast so the red states dont get polluted with fallout. Neuvo California is blue in the cities and red out in the country. Itll be breaking up soon after the Blue States seceed.

Oh, oh. Someones going delusional! Please access a map of the Disunited States of America and see where the rivers originate, as well as the millions of acres of wheat, corn, etc. Youll also have 99% of the fruits and nuts. Practice up making tortillas out of sushi- well be shipping corn and wheat to the rest of the world. We get most of our fruit and vegtables from Mexico and canada so have fun with all your illegal pickers. Condors? Theyll be well fed with the rot from within that afflicts the Blue States. Again, Percentages pulled from the liberal nether regions.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88% of all obese Americans92% of all U.S. mosquitoes,, 90% of the hurricanes, virtually 100% of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

" I'm neither democrat nor republican. Watching politics closely for the last 30 or so years has revealed a few simple truths. Neither party has acted in the best interest of the American people to whom they are under oath to serve.

I refer to these to parties as "republicrats" as it is hard to distinguish one from the other. They both act in the same self-serving manner.

We should vote for the individual that is going to best represent us as an American by upholding his or her oath of office regardless of sex, race or party. The oath I'm referring to is the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The constitution is how government is supposed to operate and the bill of rights protects us from a tyrannical government and shall not be infringed. Any candidate that feels it necessary to infringe upon those rights whether republican or democrat a traitor to people and country.

My challenge is to all voters regardless of party affiliation that you make sure that you know and understand these documents and use your power as the citizenry to make sure that they are followed and upheld. That is our only hope.

Ever read the 10 planks of the communist manifesto? There are some very interesting similarities to current methods operation. "

It is a system where the legislative, executive, and judicial branches keep each other in check and prevent each other from gaining too much power. That's how the president has the power of veto over Congress, which can also impeach him. The Senate can deny his appointments to the Supreme Court, which can also declare laws unconstitutional. In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, New York, and all of the Northeastern states. After this election, we'll be adding Colorado and New Mexico. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, especially to the people of our new country.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states; we get stem cell research, the best beaches, and the best ski resorts. We get the Statue of Liberty; you get Dollywood. We get Intel and Microsoft; you get WorldCom. We get Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Cal Tech, MIT and Columbia; you get Ole' Miss. We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs; you get Alabama. We get two-thirds of the tax revenue; you get to make the red states pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than that of the Christian Coalition, we get a bunch of happy families and you get a bunch of under-educated single moms.

If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They apparently have kids they're willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't mind if you don't televise their kid's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq and hope that those Weapons of Mass Destruction turn up for you, but we're not willing to spend any more of our money in Bush's Quagmire.

With the Blue States, we will control 80 percent of the country's fresh water, 90 percent of pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 97 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at your state dinners), 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, and all the Ivy League and Seven Sister schools. We also get New England, the Great Lakes and Yosemite, thank you very much.

In the Red States, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans and their projected health care costs, 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, 100 percent of tornadoes, 94 percent of hurricanes, 99 percent of Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, and Clemson.

Additionally, in the Red States, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless it involves the death penalty or gun ownership; 44 percent claim that evolution is only a theory; 53 percent insist that Saddam Hussein was involved in 9/11; and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you have higher moral standards than those of us on the left.

Northern Virginia counties of Prince William, Fairfax and Loudoun are overwhelmingly White, middle and upper class, and well educated-- Obama's White base to be exact. That particular region began trending Democratic with African American Governor, Doug Wilder in 1990 and in 2006 provided the winning margin to Democratic Senator, Jim Webb. If you want to observe something really interesting, look at a nationwide map of the counties Obama carried. The vast majority are in areas of good job creation, highly educated populations, a thriving middle class and generally devoid of fundamentalist religions. McCain ran strong in retrograde regions of the nation, regions like Appalachia, the cotton south, Bible belt, the wingnut regions of Texas and Oklahoma, and of course, the backwaters of the Pacific NW. None of the people interviewed even knew who Obama's running mate was. The only thing they knew was that Obama is black and that's who they were voting for. Like Eric said, it is our right as American to vote for anyone we wish for any reason. The fact of the matter is that race does have a lot to do with it because this is HISTORY in the making, we have never had a black man as president. If a woman had won, that would have made an impact as well. This is very significant...it shows that we are ready as a Nation to end divisions because of race, money or religion. At the risk of being labeled a bigot I find it ironic that all through the campaign anyone who criticized Obama in any regards was at risk of being labeled a racist or one that was making race a main issue of the campaign. Yet, once it came time to vote race was obviously an issue. The exit polls showed that these young black voters who probably would not have voted had it been two white candidates running voted for Obama because he is black. I'm in no way saying that there weren't young black voters who voted based upon ideology, but the percentage of young black Republican voters is higher than 6%. Therefore some people clearly voted based on race. People can say what they will but that is our Democratic process at work. "

But as usual democrats prove my point every time. I love it. You never let me down with your name calling and assumptions. I believe it's your only defense because you surely aren't smart enough to come up with another one. LOL. "

I voted for Obama but I feel strongly that John McCain is one of the most honorable leaders of our time. It was all the right wing baggage he had to carry that convinced me that I couldn't go that route and the Republican party is probably at the place that it needs to shed some of that weight. The Democrats did in '92. "

" It puzzled me last night to see such overwhelming support for Obama, millions of people dancing in the streets in support for this presidential elect, whom might I add has a serious lack of experience in leadership and in government (maybe that is a good thing, and then again maybe not)...

A few items still bother me, event though there is nothing we can do about it now, but they bother me and they are:

1. Everyone spoke about how they knew this was coming, that Obama had 100K people at each of his rally's and McCain only had 10K; the fact of the matter is the largest majority of the McCain supporters have jobs that are demanding and require leadership and full time attendance, we couldnt make the Obama rally's, but why would the Obama people care, all of our hard earned money is going to be rounded up and handed out to those Obama supporters...which is not fair to any of us who have dedicated our lives to working hard and saving money in hopes of having the nice homes and the nice cars to drive, while the large majority of the Obama supporters work, but never strive to better themselves, and now they want to live off of my dime...

2. What will Obama do with our 401k money now? I hear he is going to try and put it into social security? is that correct? well if it is then my parents, who scrapped by to make it all these years just so they could save their money for retirement where they hoped to have some fun traveling, will now instead be working until they are 75 and living in a mobile home in North Athol...why? They dont deserve to lose their money!

3. What ever became of the Obama birth certificate? Did anyone ever find it? I know there was a big stink about McCain being born in the Panama City area (or somewhere like that) well that is because his family was in the military, what about all of the rumors that Obama was born in Africa? Was that just a rumor? Or do we know where he was really born?

4. How in the heck did Obama win Montana?

5. How in the heck did Obama win 96% of the vote in the D.C. area? wow...landslide, but how?

Anyhow, I continued to watch his speach last night, and he is a very talanted speaker, Martin Luther King like, but I am still not 100% sold that he is the right choice for our country in this time of War and economic downfall. I am however 150% American through and through and I will continue to stand by my country and the decisions we collectively make over these next four years! "

(13% of the total votes cast yesterday for all presidential candidates were African-American) Anybody have an issue with the fact that muslim Americans are getting maimed and killed fighting the "war against terror?"

What happened is that over the last 20 years the Republican party has so lost touch with most of the voters that its own presidential candidate had to run against it to try to get elected. The botton line is that the Republican party just got wholly whooped up on. The key to the future of the GOP is to figure out how it's going change itself to regain credibility. I believe he will improve our world relations and in doing that will speed up a world geting back on track based on hope more than fear.

It is time to stop preaching fear and go after just the bad guys when they threaten us. Let others fight their own battles and fix the internal suffering of this once again great nation.

I see and expected some sour grapes about this. We must work hard at ignoring such people and if they bring up their hatreds it will not help our nation fully heal and unite to a coomon good, prosperity and mental health.

May I nicely suggest if/when you run into such fools spewing hatred, racial slures, weak minded attempts to undermine our new President... that you pity them and simply say you do not wish to hear or entertain such un-American garbage. Then walk away and leave them standing in their own drool and mumbling to themselves about birth certificates, mixed blood lines, dirty money, corrupt this or that and whatever else they drum up in attempts to peal open the wounds across the great nation. They are not Patriots and by their actions they threaten this country.

We have some new leadership now and a real chance to make some good and decent changes to our nation here and abroad. I love this country and am proud of both sides and those that voted. Who you voted for is no longer a point.

It is now all about shaking off the brainwashing we have suffered for all so long and face the facts we are in debt up to our ears, our financial system has crashed, people are losing more jobs every week, fuel prices will rise again, the world (if you honestly look araound) is not a safer place after Iraq and your family is worse off now than just a few years ago.

So alienate the sour grapes fools (who keep trying to sink us by drilling holes in the bottom of our boat) and hook up with the majority that want to pick up an oar and help row this nation back into the middle of the stream and off the rocks it is now on.

Probably because the difference between economic success and failure in this goofy state depends on fine line factors we can't control. The result is that as a state we use elections to try to control the economic risks of living here. It seems to me that we vote as if we have to viciously guard our existing wealth rather than to create an economic climate of open opportunity.

We seem to have an electorate largely comprised of "minimum" wage type workers living right on the edge who vote in a manner they think will help them control their costs, and middle and golden aged retirees who by and large made their money elsewhere, whose income is now entirely derived from investment, who have decided as a quality of life issue that they no longer want to be economically productive in the work force and who for those reasons are also motivated to vote in a way that they think will help them control their costs. Then we have the merchants (I'm one of those) and North Idaho is and will always a tough and stressful buck for most of us and having access to a sufficient stream of earned capital to sustain and grow a business is rare and fleeting which creates a ton of stress and so we are motivated to vote to try to control our costs.

The whole place exists on a knife's edge and has for the entire 30 years I've been here. I think maybe the results of yesterday's national election will help us get off the edge unless our state government policies deflect what I think will be a renewed national trend towards prosperity.

In Idaho we vote to horde wealth, other places vote to provide an opportunity to acquire and sustain wealth. I think we're losing on that one and on the sttae level we have contiued our political myopia. "

I would have voted for Condi Rice or Michael Steele in a heartbeat so for me it's not about a black issue or woman issue; it's about a moral and integrity issue. This will be four very dark years for America and America will not come through this without serious scars. I believe he has and will set the racial issues between blacks and whites back at least 40 years to 1968 and that was a very violent year. It's sad because if you were around in '68 you probably didn't vote for him but if you were a first time, uninformed, black and college student voter born in 1988; then you probably did! Now let's see how anxious you are to vote for him in 2012 if he makes it that long without being impeached! You all will rue the day that you voted for this man, trust me. "

1) would anyone clarify how the O-bomb is ready to lead a nation with only some 140 days in the senate???
2) have any of you heard the term demagogue?
3)obama is a smooth talker(when his speeches are pre-wrote) but i seldomly heard a solid plan. more like, im just going to be different...
4)Why do you think he cares about you?

those questions are for the DEMS out there, because i know the rational REPS had already thought about this and found only scary answers

i wish him luck "

Talk about a bought and paid for election but then we all new that was going to happen. "

There were more people running for president than just the democrats or republicans. What about the constitutional party or other parties? Why don't you step out of the box sometime and vote for a real candidate instead of the garbage the two main parties always give us? Maybe then we'd has some hope. "

We can never forget stolen elections and the 911 fraud. I hope our congressional members will no longer feel threatened by the oval office and will encourage investigations into 911 and the illegal wars with have torn thousands of families here in the US and millions in those countries. I support free will and honest information available to all. "

" No, actually, our dollars are already in Washington and our jobs have already been shipped overseas. Prices have risen and jobs have been lost. The oil companies are filthy rich and our wallets have been getting lighter for the past eight years. Based on your theory we'll just have more of the same. You knew that's what you'd be getting when you voted for McCain, so I guess you're prepared.

Hayden Mom, please look up the definition of socialist before you spew it to the rest of us. Odds are you don't even understand what it means. "

" Oh, shut up Niles and LM. I find it funny how we had to accept a stolen election in 2000 and an election won by fear in 2004 but a few Republicans think it's armageddon because John McCain lost. May I remind you that he ran the WORST CAMPAIGN IN THE HISTORY OF U.S. POLITICS. He didn't deserve to win. We have a two party system in the U.S. When one party is in power and they pf**k the country up, the other party takes over. The only time this didn't happen was in 2004. Abortions decline during Democratic administrations. If you're opposed to gay marriage it's none of your business anyway. Your morals are low for spouting this crap and I doubt you spend any time in a church. We finally have a man in the White House that hasn't cheated on his wife, that worked this way through college, who helped his community. I am responding because you aren't going anywhere. With your attitude, you'd never make it in a foreign country where you have to have racial tolerance and where people don't think you're better than them. If you can find one that takes you, then good riddance. Finally, intelligence and integrity in the White House and at least 53 million people are excited about it. Did you guys get this scared when Clinton was in office, twice? Don't be sore losers. We're better than that. Do you have any education at all? "
