Republicans retain all local seats in Tuesday voting
COEUR d'ALENE -- Barack Obama and Walt Minnick might have been swept into office on a blue tide, but Kootenai County is still as red as ever.
"Naturally I'm disappointed with Bill Sali and John McCain. I don't understand it," said Brad Corkill, chair of the Kootenai County Republicans. "But, locally, we did very well. We kept all of our seats."
Nationally, Obama handily took care of Sen. John McCain, but in Kootenai County he was outvoted 38,387 (61.38 percent) to 22,120 (35.37 percent).
Statewide, Walt Minnick edged U.S. Rep. Bill Sali 175,567 (51 percent) to 171,324 (49 percent) -- at last count. In Kootenai County, Sali reversed the percentages beating Minnick 30,661 (51 percent) to 29,917 (49 percent).
Also, all of North Idaho's incumbent lawmakers were re-elected, which only includes Democrat Reps. George Sayler, Coeur d'Alene, and Mary Lou Shepherd, Wallace. Shepherd ran unopposed.
Before the race, political theorists watched several legislative races in North Idaho closely -- particularly District 1 and District 4 -- to see if the Democrats could pick up what some called vulnerable seats. Those seats stayed Republican and the GOP was able to pick up a District 33 seat in eastern Idaho.
"I wouldn't really say it's surprising. North Idaho voters are very well informed. John Goedde and Marge Chadderdon (both GOP lawmakers in District 4) have got track records. People recognize and appreciate that and will send them back again," Corkill said.
Jim Hansen, executive director for the Democratic Party, predicted a hard race for the Democrats in Idaho this week which, he said, is typical of presidential races in this state. He said Obama's race and the "national mood" was enough to involve and educate voters in local races, which contributed to Minnick's victory over incumbent Sali.
"They did know (Sali's record), so Walt Minnick won," Hansen said.
Hansen said Democrats nearly holding their own in the Legislature and picking up a seat in the U.S. House during a presidential election is a victory.
"It's tough in a presidential year. We've lost seats every presidential year since 1988," Hansen said. "We've increased the seats, on average, in non-presidential years."
He said in Ada County 16,000 more people voted for the president than the county commissioner.
"By the time they voted for the commissioners they had ballot fatigue," Hansen said. "In a presidential race there are huge numbers of voters who only focus on the national election (and vote strictly along party lines)."
Kootenai County broke records for voter turnout this week.
"Compared to the last presidential election four years ago there were about 8,000 more votes counted," said Dan English, Kootenai County clerk.
In Kootenai County, there was an 87 percent turnout of about 72,000 registered voters.
"I'm sure we'll end up with at least 3,000 to 4,000 new registered voters (since Idaho allows election day registration)," English said.
Hansen said the Obama and Minnick races were "huge" and with the statewide races "We came close, but didn't quite pull it off."
Corkill said Kootenai County's population keeps growing, but its political base has stayed the same.
"It's not going to change much. We're still as strong as we've ever been in the Legislature and even more so," Corkill said. "With Gov. (Butch) Otter in office and Republicans in the Legislature we're going to see a lot happen in January."
