Lewiston's girls team took top region honors with 60.5 points and was followed by Lake City (33), Post Falls (28) and Coeur d'Alene (8).

The state tournament is next Friday and Saturday at Julia Davis Park in Boise.

Wahlin, Helander

shine for Sandpoint

SANDPOINT -- Sandpoint's Piper Wahlin and Abby Helander are well known for their exploits on the volleyball court, ranking among the best in the state at outside hitter and libero, respectively.

Saturday they made a name for themselves on the tennis court, staging a remarkable comeback to win the girls doubles championship at the 4A Region 1 tennis tournament at Travers Park.

Freshman Kevin Kirby won the boys singles title, and juniors Mikka Nostdahl and Dustin Pierce teamed up for the boys doubles title to lead the Bulldog boys to a 4A North district title. Sandpoint will take six boys and two girls to state next weekend, with the aforementioned being joined by Rob Carne and Jackson Bussard in doubles, and Ben Hardy in singles.

The most drama-packed match was the girls doubles final, where Wahlin and Helander found themselves down a set and trailing their Moscow opponents 5-2 in the second set. The athletic pair staved off two match points before completely turning the tide, winning 12 of the next 13 games and cruising to state with ample momentum.

"They finally quit trying to overpower the other team and started hitting into the open court; playing real doubles," said Sandpoint coach Kent Anderson, calling it the match of the day. "They've got the ability to win state, but they're not going to do it playing maverick singles. They need to work on strategy, and when they start to game plan they're unbeatable."

Anderson also had high praise for the play of Kirby, who features a consistent game belying his age and experience. He knocked off teammate and senior Ben Hardy in a tight three-set match in the semis that was suspended on Friday due to heavy rains, before dispatching his Moscow opponent 6-0, 6-1 in the championship.

"He played a great match against Ben in the semis," said Anderson, noting it was stressful to have to rejoin a match after waiting a day. "He got into the finals and it was smoke city."

PULLMAN -- Coeur d'Alene Charter set a school record at the District 3A tournament, advancing seven players to next week's state 3A tournament, breaking the mark of five set last season.

In a repeat contest from last season, Charter's Sarah Blair and Elizabeth Mann squared off in the girls singles championship, and once again Blair came out on top, 6-2, 7-5.

In girls doubles, Charter's duo of Nicole Nixon and Sofia Cardoso eliminated teammates Kym Bowlby and Julianna Satterly 6-4, 6-2 in a consolation match. Nixon and Cardosa lost their next match to a tandem from Grangeville, but advanced to state with a fourth-place finish.

Charter's Steven Hallgren eliminated teammate Mitch Ketron 6-4, 6-3 in a boys singles consolation match, and Hallgren advanced to state by finishing fourth after losing to a player from Grangeville.

James George and Cesar Stoddard will represent Charter at state in boys doubles with a third-place finish after defeating two doubles teams from Grangeville in consolation play.

Charter's mixed team of Brook Berard and Travis Smith were eliminated by a duo from Deary in their first consolation match of the day.

"Being seniors, it worked out nicely Sarah and Elizabeth played again for the district championship," Charter coach Ray Longpre said. "I'm expecting big things from the team at the state tournament."
