'Friends of the Earth' need reality check on predators
Posted: May 22, 2015

A recent opinion piece by Kevin Brown in the Cd'A Press developed the idea of a pristine natural environment where the natural predators and the natural prey would be much better off without man altering the scheme. He then revealed the source of the current dilemma and conspiracy against the natural world by disclosing freely available information that the Idaho Department of Fish and Game was being paid off by those who would keep that natural world at bay. He followed the money, as in sales of licenses and no doubt bribes to our legislative class. This last is something where his organizations are in fact leading the way.

Hayden residents, don't be misled
Posted: May 22, 2015

In the business world it is often said that if influence is social currency, then integrity is gold. I appreciate that this is an election year. I'm aware that some organizations will resort to misleading the public to gain an advantage. I hope we can rise above such tactics and recognize that civil discourse and honesty will win the day. I hope I'm not so old-fashioned that I've become obsolete in my attitude.

Graduate to next level: a voter
Posted: May 16, 2015

May brings the excitement of graduations for family friends and neighbors. The higher education campus has already graduated more than 200 from LCSC and U of I and NIC graduates will walk on May 15. Though many local students should now be deep into the books preparing for exams, I want to raise another very important activity for recent and soon-to-be grads: voting. High school seniors in particular should be looking forward to exercising your new right as an adult. Whether you are a new voter or not, the General Obligation Bond and other basic initiatives on this ballot provide a great first voting experience. The issues on the ballot are clear and you will find lots of information available to help you understand what is on the ballot so that you can make informed voting decisions.

Child support bill about responsibility, accountability
Updated: May 15, 2015 - 12:09 am

Idaho's special legislative session to address child support is Monday. For all of us, it is critical that we uphold the values that make Idaho great. At the top of that list is personal responsibility.

America's failing moral compass
Posted: May 14, 2015

Reuters and CNN made public the April 13 Pew poll findings. The survey questioned 2002 U.S. adults between Sept. 2 and Sept. 9 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percent. Overall the survey showed 72 percent of Americans say religion's influence is waning in public life. And that this trend is a bad thing. Up 5 points from 2010. The belief that the Obama administration is unfriendly to religion rose by 19 percent since 2009.

What's a man's word worth?
Posted: May 09, 2015

I do not know either County Commissioner Marc Eberlein or County Commissioner David Stewart personally. When they ran for County Commissioner they both presented themselves as champions of "personal property rights" and promised to represent the citizens of Kootenai County fairly. After researching their positions as much as I could, I concluded that there was nothing that either of these men said, or was quoted as saying, that would have prevented me from voting for them. In other words, I took them at their word.

Sgt. Moore: From Texas with love
Posted: May 08, 2015

My name is Ronda Seidule and I live in Montgomery, Texas. I'm just an average citizen who is concerned about the state of our brave men and women police officers. Last night I wrote this in honor of Sgt. Moore and every other fallen officer. I didn't know Sgt. Moore, but felt compelled to let his family know that I care. That people do care about his death and every other brave officer who has died protecting us.

Updated: April 29, 2015 - 12:47 am

The Idaho Dairymen's Association (IDA), Idaho's largest dairy producer trade association, and Glanbia Foods Inc., Idaho's largest dairy processor, express our sincerest thanks to Sen. Mike Crapo for his recent support of The Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015. Pot and universal bill of rights
Posted: April 25, 2015

Recently at a debate in Boise over making life-changing medication available to Idaho children suffering from terrible seizures, two points stood out that were made by Idaho lawmakers. One lawmaker commented that he wished they could help suffering Idaho children, but their hands were tied as the federal classification of marijuana would trump their effort. Another lawmaker commented that a new federal administration could come into power and enforce the federal law on the books.

Sovereignty a key reason to hold child-support bill
Updated: April 22, 2015 - 12:45 am

Senate Bill S1067 is basically a 31-page document which has caused great concern among many Idaho Representatives as well as our constituents. This is an international treaty and Idaho will be held to international law and its consequences. We are concerned about protecting the sovereignty of Idaho. The United States government has made coercive threats of withholding federal funds from Idaho's child support programs, insisting Idaho recognize orders from foreign countries with little recourse or appeal.

Grandstanding at expense of Idaho's most vulnerable
Updated: April 17, 2015 - 1:07 am

An unfortunate split decision by the Judiciary and Rules Committee in the House of Representatives will hurt the most vulnerable in Idaho. Nine members of that committee voted against eight others, including myself, to kill a bill that was critical to child support collection. Their action endangers about $200 million in support to children in single parent homes all over Idaho, and will cost the state of Idaho $47 million in federal funding (equivalent to 50 percent of the amount of money the Legislature stayed in Boise an extra three weeks trying to find for transportation).

Criminals: Little to fear from prosecutor
Posted: April 11, 2015

Attention all scalawags, swindlers, con men, and other scam artists. Consider opening up shop in Kootenai County, Idaho, as you will have little to fear from Prosecutor Barry McHugh or his staff. If you have been following this malfeasance of duty, as I have, you may recall that this case began over three years ago when it came to light that Kevin Mitchell and his daughter, Sarah, accepted money for the purchase of gold or silver coins which the victims never received, making numerous excuses for non-delivery. The detectives from Coeur d'Alene Police Department conducted an investigation into this fraud and subsequently submitted their findings to Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh. This is where the foot dragging on McHugh's part began.

Living in The Gap

Our Idaho Legislators are packing up and heading home for the interim. While I am sure many of them feel they accomplished something this legislative session and represented their constituents adequately, all of them bear responsibility for leaving something vital undone - Medicaid redesign. For myself, and many Idahoans, adoption of the Healthy Idaho Plan would make a profound impact in our lives. I work hard but don't make enough to qualify for affordable health insurance. I'd like to share my story with you, in the hopes that it will dispel some of the myths about Idaho's working poor and the Medicaid gap.

When you're elected, it's your duty to listen
Updated: April 07, 2015 - 12:31 am

As a Unitarian Universalist minister, I was upset to hear about the three Idaho senators who left the Senate rather than listen to a Hindu prayer. I believe that in a democratic, pluralist society, good leaders need to listen to all voices, whether they agree or not, because that is how we find common ground. I was also disturbed by the lack of knowledge exhibited about of the founding of our country. The United States is not a Christian nation. The Constitution of the United States in its First Amendment clearly says there will not be a state religion. We have always embraced religious freedom.

Jesus: The precocious socialist?

State legislators, Hindu prayer leaders and NIC have all had a spate of religiosity that has affected our community. Currently, NIC has been involved in a campus-wide effort to read the book "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich. Chosen by a small committee of NIC faculty, the book does a good job of offering some insights into the plight of the working poor in America. However, in an effort to bring greater awareness and balance, I address certain religious themes of this book.

Senators were correct to shun Hindu prayer
Posted: March 12, 2015

Sholeh Patrick's March 10 article, "The Om heard round the world," appears to be bent upon defending Idaho's reputation on the world stage instead of defending the truth. She assumes that certain Senators (Vick and Nuxoll) acted rudely by not participating in false worship, which we are all obliged to do, and proceeds to apologize for them by claiming they are not the substance of what true Idahoans are made up of. Furthermore, she expects them to apologize. Preponderous request to say the least. Perhaps before embarking on such a mission, she should ponder her own errors in representing the Hindu religion in only one or two sentences.

Nuxoll doesn't understand religious freedom
Posted: March 11, 2015

Senator Sheryl Nuxoll would have drawn less heat declaring Hinduism a different faith rather than a false faith. In a world of absolutes she might be able to make her case, but in a world where relativism dominates, truth and falsity are in the eye of the beholder when it comes to faith. She was right in choosing not to attend the prayer session, but she was right for the wrong reason.
