Fred and Dorla Overlin
On July 2, 2018, Fred and Dorla Overlin, of Post Falls, will celebrate their marriage of 72 years.
Dorla and Fred met in Sheridan, Wyo., when Fred came home from three and a half years in the Navy. He was 18 (Fred, being anxious to serve his country like his three brothers, fibbed just a little to get in to the Navy at 15). They were both members of the First Baptist Church, in Sheridan, where they met at a New Year’s Eve party in 1945.
They were married in 1946, in Hardin, Mont. Fred was 19 and Dorla 16. In 1948, their daughter Linda was born, and in 1949, their son, Larry.
Dorla worked as a telephone operator, and more recently, Chief Deputy Clerk of Court in Polson, Mont. Fred worked for 48 years as a refrigerator and appliance repairman, and later Bailiff of District Court and Juvenile Detention Officer, also in Polson.
Fred built the family a beautiful new home in Polson, which they lived in for many years before moving to Post Falls. They have lived in the Riverside Harbor area for the past 18 years.
When asked what advice Fred had for a long, happy marriage, he replied, “Find a good, Christian woman and put the Lord in the middle of your marriage. Love your wife even when things don’t go well. I don’t just love my wife, I LIKE her and want to spend time with her.” And a great deal of time they have spent together!
Fred is 91, and Dorla 88.
Charles and Lois Abate
Charles and Lois (Read) Abate, of Coeur d’Alene, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. There were married on June 8, 1948.
Charles and Lois worked at Wilkes University — Charles as the Business Manager and Lois in the Registrar’s Office. Both are now retired.
Their children are Charles and Christine Abate of Syracuse, N.Y., Richard and Cora Abate of Shavertown, Pa., Joseph and Kathi Abate of Coeur d’Alene, and Murnal and Liz Abate of Montrose, Pa. They have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private celebration was held at The Lodge on June 8, 2018.
Gary and Cathy O’Neal
Gary and Cathy O’Neal met at Pizza Villa in Coeur d’Alene across the street from the Drive-In Movies on Government Way. Gary borrowed a quarter to challenge the pool table when he saw Cathy playing pool with a friend.
Their first date was a Halloween party the next evening at the same place. He asked her to marry him a week later and she said yes! They have been inseparable since.
They were married on the banks of the Spokane River June 25, 1978. Gary’s dad married them. Gary sang “Your Song” to Cathy.
They honeymooned in their ’63 Chevy pickup “Ole Whitey” cruising down the California coast to their destination, the Disneyland Hotel, where they stayed for several days before returning to Coeur d’Alene.
They have been in ministry for much of their career, which took them from Coeur d’Alene to California from 1988 to 1996. They have lived in Harrison, Dalton Gardens and Coeur d’Alene ever since.
Gary and Cathy have two daughters, one son-in-law and their first grandbaby will join the family this September.
They are riding their motorcycles through the western states again this summer. They will also be celebrating their 40 years together with a trip to Hawaii this winter.
They have had quite an amazing, wonderful ride through this journey called marriage and they look forward to many more memorable years together.
