COEUR d’ALENE — A long-time suspect in the shooting death of a Spokane Valley man was taken into custody this week in Jacksonville, Fla.
Former Coeur d’Alene resident Christina C. Stiles, 38, was arrested late Tuesday in connection with the 2016 death of Cory Fowler, who was shot once in the face and once in the chest from close range with a .38 handgun in his Spokane Valley apartment.
Fowler’s parents Patty and Dan Fowler live in Athol.
Fowler, 34, was found dead on the floor of his Spokane Valley apartment on the 12000 block of E. Mansfield Avenue on Feb. 18, 2016, by Dan Fowler. The Spokane County Medical Examiner ruled Fowler died from a gunshot wound to the face.
According to newspaper accounts at the time, Stiles, a former girlfriend of Fowler’s who also shared a child with him, was the main suspect in the case.
Prior to Fowler’s death, he and Stiles were involved in heated child custody hearings over their young child, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives used search warrants to access Stiles’ computers and cellphones, and pored over digital records including email accounts as they looked for clues in the case.
Stiles disappeared after explaining in a note she left for family members two years ago that the police investigation into Fowler’s death, and its surrounding publicity “was ruining her reputation and she hoped her disappearance would allow the case to be closed,” according to news accounts.
Stiles was arrested Tuesday without incident, and with the assistance of the U.S. marshals, on a charge of first-degree murder, according to the Spokane sheriff’s office.
If Stiles does not waive her rights to be extradited to Spokane for trial, she will be held in Florida pending extradition proceedings, according to the sheriff’s office.
