LEGION BASEBALL: Pote comes through again as Northern Lakes splits

| July 4, 2020 1:06 AM

RATHDRUM — Reliever Scott Pote struck out the final batter with the tying run at third as the Northern Lakes Mountaineers class A squad edged the Spokane Cannons 3-2 to earn a split of their nonleague doubleheader Friday at Lakeland High.

“It was dramatic for sure,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “Scott did it again; came in and closed the door.”

In the opener, Northern Lakes held the Cannons to three hits, but one was a two-run double in a three-run second inning that sparked Spokane to a 3-2 win.

Colton Aragon hit an RBI single in the first inning of the second game for Northern Lakes (11-2), and Jack McDonald added a run-scoring single in the second.

Pote struck out three in two innings of relief for the Mountaineers, and starter Jaret Taylor fanned eight in five innings.

Northern Lakes pitching allowed the Cannons just seven hits total in the two games.

Both Jack (McDonald) and Jaret pitched really well today,” Johnson said. “I thought we played pretty clean today.”

Northern Lakes is scheduled to play twice at home on Tuesday, facing the Prairie Cardinals AA at 3 p.m. in a nonleague game and the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen in a class A North Idaho League game at 5, both at Lakeland High.
