PREP GOLF: Coeur d'Alene boys, girls triumph at season-opening tourney

MOSCOW — The season changed, but the top teams were familiar.

Coeur d’Alene’s boys and girls captured team titles at the season-opening Moscow Invitational on Monday at the University of Idaho Course.

Luke West of Coeur d’Alene was boys medalist with a 1-over-par 73. The Vikings, who were missing sophomore Grant Potter, last spring’s 5A Region 1 medalist, shot a 308 for a 32-stroke victory over Sandpoint.

Jamison Dale shot 77 for Coeur d’Alene, and Trey Nipp and Landon Strigham each shot 79s.

“Proud of our boys today,” Coeur d’Alene boys coach Chase Bennett said. “It shows they put in the work in the summer to polish their golf games.”

Brady Hanna of Lakeland shot 78 and finished fourth. Wyatt Johnson led Lake City with a 79.

Mady Riley shot 88 to lead Coeur d’Alene’s girls, who shot 360 to win by eight strokes over Lewiston.

“I couldn’t be more happy with how the girls started the year,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. “We left a few shots on and around the greens and we plan to really focus on our short game in the coming practices to drop those scores even lower.”

After years of being a spring sport, golf in the 5A and 4A classifications in Idaho will be played in the fall for the next two years on a trial basis.
