Arbor Day in May

The city of Hayden hosted its 20th annual Arbor Day event on Wednesday.

About 650 students from Hayden Meadows Elementary School, Northwest Expedition Academy, North Idaho Christian School and Northland Training Academy participated in the festivities, along with parents and teachers. They learned about trees, planting, history, wind, soil, water, landscape, light, energy conservation and more.

Interim Mayor Scott Forssell read the Arbor Day Proclamation to the students. The city of Hayden was presented with its 20th Tree City USA award from Garth Davis of the Idaho Community Forestry program.

Following this presentation, Forssell, Hayden City Councilwoman Sandra White, Vice Commissioner Malea Sampsel and Joel Johnson of Hayden Parks, Recreation and Community Forestry awarded prizes for the 2022 Arbor Day Sticker Contest. The grand prize winner was Hayden Meadows fifth-grader Ellie McCalmant. Second place was won by Northland Training Academy eighth-grader Bridger Fobes. Hayden Meadows fifth-grader Hudson Rasor, earned third place. Honorable mention went to Hayden Meadows fifth-grader Cooper Arrotta.

In a news release, the city thanked community volunteers, Hayden city staff and members of the various commissions who assisted in making this event happen.
