COEUR d’ALENE — Francisco Ramirez is following a blueprint to the American Dream.

After working in kitchens for seven years, “Pancho,” as he’s known to his friends, branched out last year and opened his own restaurant, El Paisa, at 1801 Lincoln Way.

It’s been a good first year, said Pancho, who does the cooking himself but has hired some help, too.

“I’m working good,” he said Sunday inside the tidy restaurant. “Everybody likes it, no complaints, no nothing.”

Which is why the start-up businessman is confused.

Late Friday or early Saturday, his business was vandalized for the third time in two months.

Nothing was stolen, but a rock was thrown through his front glass door. The front window, too, was riddled with holes. This, on the heels of someone putting glue on the inside of the door’s lock rendering Pancho’s door key useless on two different occasions in May.

“I like so much Idaho, it’s nice, it’s good, (with) nice people,” said Pancho, who’s lived in the area for 20 years. “So why me? It’s confusing.”

It’s also a little scary, he said. The lock pranks cost Pancho around $100 to fix both times, receipts from County Lock and Key and The Lock Doctor show. But this weekend’s assault caused upwards of $1,000 damage, requiring a brand new door.

He said he doesn’t have any disgruntled customers, business or personal rivals, and lives a quiet life free of bars or drugs so he can’t even come up with a possible suspect list himself.

“Oh my god, amigo, I don’t know what it is,” Pancho said.

His business is insured, and he’ll be contacting his agent today regarding the latest hit.

Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Todd Hedge said the report will be turned over to investigations today.

“We got a lead that we’re pursuing,” Hedge said, adding it’s too early to tell whether any of the cases are related.

Though the sting of vandalism makes Pancho nervous, he has no plans to quit or move his business, which he started himself following his dream. He hasn’t noticed damage to any of the neighboring businesses in the strip mall where his restaurant sits during the last three months, so he doesn’t know why he’s being singled out, if that’s the case.

“Just me,” he said. “I don’t know what’s the problem.”

noname... This article isnt about immigration. This article is about vandalism. Cutting and pasting isn't racist, but reading into in the way you are could be considered that.

@ NoName, REALLY? You want to go there with the libs thing? You're an idiot too. I can't believe you would cut and paste the fact the journalist typed it as he said it. So he has an accent. Since when does an accent in this country mean anything? And if you want to know. I think he sounds alot more intelligent then you. Good grief, you are disgusting. Yea he may not be from Idaho. Infact he may have a family that speaks in another language and have a heavy accent , when a child is raised around that , they tend to carry it out through their adult life. So you really are an idiot. You are what makes me sick. You are a racist jerk. So how is good ole Mr. Butler besides dead ? Good grief, get over your racist self and grow the heck up. Really , you make yourself look like a big ole idiot!!!

Shaft says: "Sooo..... Why does it matter where he's from?" Well it looks like Shaft only likes to enforce some laws and not all laws? Is that right Shaft? If "Pancho" is not here legally, I'm guessing you'd like to only enforce the law as it pertains to the vandalism and not his being here illegally if that's indeed the case?
If Pancho is a legal citizen, that's awesome, good for Pancho! I fully endorse legal immigration. If not, buh-bye.

Well you pompous libs..... here are direct quotes:

“I like so much Idaho, it’s nice, it’s good, (with) nice people,” said Pancho, who’s lived in the area for 20 years. “So why me? It’s confusing.”

“I’m working good,” he said Sunday inside the tidy restaurant. “Everybody likes it, no complaints, no nothing.”

Is that how a hillbilly speaks? LOL.... Sounds like "Speedy Gonzales" to me..... He's NOT from Idaho and I doubt he's from anyplace north of San Franciso. East Los maybe.....

Who knows if he's born here or there or anywhere.... Who cares!!! Vandalism should not be reported differently based on race. If this was done because of race it would be considered a hate crime. Lets not jump to conclusions. Maybe he cut someone off in traffic. maybe it was random. This has nothing to do with his status as an American citizen legal/illegal/half legal whatever.

p.s. you dont have to be a "legal" immigrant to obtain a business license.

Rationaldiscussionplz..... you're an idiot. Do you even know what pretentious means? And how can I sound self righteous by being behind this man 100%. If you go back and read slowly my rational post, you will see I am upset over the fact that those who call him a " LEGAL Immigrant" are shallow in the their thoughts to say that. How can you lable a person that way? How do you know he isn't an American? To assume those who " Legal Immigrants" is wrong. Did they lable due to his ethnic back ground? Yes I believe they did, when in fact they have no clue from where he came. For all they know his family can be from this country many generations. I realize most of us all come from immigrants, but to blantly put in that way is in my opinion prejudice. That's all I am sayin. I don't know where you get pretentious and self righteous from.. LOL And Noname, that was my point exactly, we don't know where the cowboy is from, so to say he is a" Legal immigrant" is to me, offensive.

Meanie you are right on. The article said that he has lived in the area 20 years. For all we know he is a 4th generation American(like me). TomKatt Don't know what you are saying I'm thinking that you are Native and are making a statement about Euro-Americans invading your land and having to give up your Land and home to the enemy????

Translation: Invading enemy alien breaks into our country, with the intention of stealing Euro-American money (welfare, food stamps, free medical, etc, etc), homes, and women, then terrorizing the Euro-Americans into leaving (as in Calif), and everyone pretends to surprised when Americans who have not been turned into sheep by the media don't want to give up their Land and homes to the enemy....

Do you realize just how self-righteous and pretentious you sound, meanie?

Whatever cretin is vandalizing this man's business needs to be stopped. It's ridiculous that there have been three incidents of this. I feel bad for Ramirez, his food is absolutely amazing and really inexpensive compared to similar restaurants. You'd think people would be appreciative of a place like that. I guess people just can't have nice things. Hopefully the low life who is doing this is caught soon.

Hey Meanie..... I was responding to Jr. I re-read the article, doesn't say where this cowboy came from.

OK, well I just feel disgused in reading both Noname and Jr's comments. REALLY ? LEGAL immigrants? Do you realize just how prejudice and ignorant that sounds?. Maybe you shoud read the story again. It states he has lived in the area for 20 years. And to call a person a LEGAL immigrant, is such a slap in the face, in my opinion. Would't that be an American? How do you know he wasn't born in this country? People , really !!! Think before you open your mouths or type. It is probaby obvious he is being targeted due to his ethnic back ground, which is a total disgrace. But to add more salt to the wound by saying..... Legal immigrant , and praising him for a job well done because you believe he is struggling because of his ethnic back ground , is just plain ignorant. You people are the reason why racist and prejudice opinions keep hanging round. He is just man trying to earn a living like everyone else , regardless of color or race.... Please stop the ignorance! Now I hope they find the shallow minded people that are costing this man money and grief.

Shades of the past are still present here to some degree. A surveillance camera might help nail the perp.

J Jr. says: ""We need to support LEGAL immigrants who are working, paying taxes and bettering our communities."" I don't NEED to support them. Why would I support THEM over anyone else? Perhaps you really mean we should give them a fair shot? Sure, I can go with that- but I'm not going to SUPPORT them over anyone else trying to make a living, especially over natural born Americans.

Is this a mistake? Someone put glue on the INSIDE of the door's lock?

I am not a detective by any means, BUT... I have to wonder if there is another restaurant owner who somehow believes his business would be better if this fellows business did not exist. Sounds like bullying to me. Yeah...bullying.

The article is a good thing, and I hope whoever is doing these things READS it.

We need to support LEGAL immigrants who are working, paying taxes and bettering our communities. This fellow is obviously hard working, and quite an entrepeneur. Good for him! He's accomplishing alot more than others who were born in this country, and use to "programs."

If I were this guy, I'd put a sign which stated "This business has been repeatedly vandalized. Please contact the police, if you know who the vandal is. (List CDA police #) Thank you, Pancho"

I hope the CDA police department, is able to locate the person doing this. I'd sure like to know "why."

(PS: When referring to our Heavenly Father, we CAPITALIZE His name. "God")
