We're all familiar with traditional Mother's Day gifts such as flowers and candy. There are, however, some Mother's Day gifts that fall into a more unusual category - gifts like car washes and oil changes.

On Saturday, for the seventh year running, Heart of the City Church is doing a single moms outreach. The first 50 single moms to sign up by calling the church will receive an oil change, detailed car wash, 20-pound food box, 10-pound personal care box and a case of macaroni and cheese. The next 50 will get all of the above except for the oil change.

"A lot of single moms don't get a really good Mother's Day, so we want to bless them and give them a great present," said Joe Tuttle, youth pastor of the church. "We think single moms are heroes and we want to make them feel like heroes."

The event, which will be held at Lett's Auto Center, 1114 N. Third St., will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Single moms unable to sign up for the car wash are still welcome to drop in for a barbecue, prizes, and games for the kids. Everything is free.

"Each mom who signs up will have her own personal host for the event," Tuttle said. "The host will greet her when she arrives and make sure her needs are met. Children, of course, are welcome."

Since the number of car washes and oil changes is limited, Tuttle advises calling as soon as possible because the event fills up rapidly and by Saturday there are usually no slots left. The church's phone number is (208) 964-2304.

"You know, we're called Heart of the City and we really believe we have a heart for our city," Tuttle said. "We want the people to know God's love through our actions - not just through our words."

Simple you will be on my prayer list. Giving feels so much better than making comments like that.

There are a lot of married mothers that could use some special treatment while their husbands work two or three jobs. Why do we always cater to the so called "down and out"?

What a wonderful thing to do for the single moms! In this world of greed and the "ME ME ME" attitudes it warms my heart to know that there is still a few good hearted people left to reach out and help those that have so little. If we all reached out and helped even one person with the "Pay it Forward" rule this world would be a better place. Thank you Heart of the City Church and all that contibute to this wonderful program and most of all "Thank you god for your blessings".
