A home near Medimont was broken into last week and approximately two dozen guns were reportedly stolen, according to a Kootenai County Sheriff's Office report.
The home, on South Willow Creek Road, was entered after the burglar or burglars smashed the handle of a metal door that led to the basement. A sledgehammer was found just outside the door.
The homeowner, who discovered the burglary Friday night, told investigators the hammer was left out front for splitting wood.
A bedroom window also was broken. There was evidence someone had tried to tie a window frame to a vehicle and pull it out.
The homeowner said he wasn't sure exactly how many guns were taken, at least until he completes an inventory of the guns he has at his primary residence in Coeur d'Alene.
He said approximately 25 guns were taken, including rifles and pistols, with an estimated value of more than $5,000.
"It appears the person who broke into the residence, broke in with the intent to steal guns," the report said.
Two chain saws, though, were also stolen, with an estimated value of $1,600.
Fingerprints were taken from glass panels on the gun cabinet which held the majority of the stolen guns.
