COEUR d'ALENE - After 50 years of standing, The Freedom Tree was felled on Friday.

Construction crews removed the 65-foot tall Norwegian Spruce around 9 a.m. as part of the McEuen Field development project that got under way in earnest this week.

But a new Freedom Tree will grow soon.

A new Norway spruce 'Freedom Tree' will be planted in an area just west of the new Veterans' Memorial when the park project is complete, along with its plaque.

"I really hate to see that happen," Fred McMurray, after whom the tree was dedicated, told The Press earlier this month after he received word the tree was coming down. "But I accept it."

The tree, originally planted around 1960 near Front Avenue and Fourth Street as a way to prevent development from encroaching on Tubbs Hill, earned its name after it was dedicated to Coeur d'Alene native McMurray, who had been taken prisoner during the Vietnam War, in 1972.

So what's to be done with all the wood that a 65-foot felled tree can produce?

McMurray will get a couple of chunks as a keepsake of the real thing, he said Friday, including some cuttings to plant an offspring tree at his property.

"They're going to cut down some pieces for me," he said.

Leftovers still provide other options, which the city is considering after asking the public for suggestions.

The possibilities include planting other 'offspring' Freedom Trees, and carving chain saw artwork or benches for the park.

Something that is pretty to look at and valuable is what most people think of when they think of jewels. Add sometimes our thoughts go back centuries to the Egyptians wearing these bright and shinny gems. Did you ever think that these gems would be used in the making of watches? Most people don't realize that they are a valuable part in the productions of watch making. watches-jewels.net

If it's only a tree why can't we go into the forest and log them then? The growth in this town has only helped one segment of this area. The rest of us are hung out to dry. If progress is so great why did anyone leave where they came from to move here? It seems to me those towns were progressing. Eventually everything that has made this place unique and great is being thrown out the window to attract more people. It's the only way to keep this sinking ship afloat. I have spent well over 30 summers and winters here. And the progress that I have seen come has come at the expense of nature and the locals jobs.

Change is not always good. Sometimes change destroys. I only hope that this change that you all so desperately want does not backfire on you. Will you then admit that your change is no good? Cda has been gone for quite some time now. Dwayne alene should be it's new name....

I think if you are wanting to live in a "no change" world, you will struggle with these issues. It is a tree people! We did not lose freedom because we lost a tree named after it! And, to have a ceremony? When this first came up, I started asking tons of people where this tree was. No one knew! The outrage is ONLY here on these crazy blogs. The rest of the community has no idea about this tree... Go ahead, ask around. You will see.

Gee, got new posters " cdajon ( that thinks their impressive ) and hiway90." The Fab 4 must be getting desperate. The Fab 4 know they are on their way out, so now they're posting more. Going to get interesting towards the elections since they're all up for replacement.

Come June on the protest of BLO-EMS business, we can now add her " DIS-RESPECT " for all vetrans. Her financial interests along with the others in her pocket have no regard for anyone else.

Too bad we can't " tar and feather " the Fab 4 and run them out of town.

Floorist.....your post definately shows not only your mentality, but also your demeanor. Caius....you need to move to wherever you came from and quit trying to change this area. We are who we are, simple and at ease. We don't need or want your big city lifestyle. Your attitude along with the Fab 4 is what is destroying this area.

The problem is not McEuen. It is the process that you took to achieve your desired result. There is a big difference in doing something morally and ethically and not. You people couldn't build a successful business without fleecing and scamming taxpayers. It is the lie after lie after lie that people are upset about but you are to stupid to realize it.

So go ahead and thump your chests in your cliquey little groups. You are still con-artist, scammers and liars.

If you don't want any change or any progress, and to always live in the past and watch your town decay into shambles, move to Bonner's Ferry.

We own a house in Bonners and have family that live there too. Let me tell you, most of the people up there are depressed and hopeless.

It's the same everywhere, a small group of "Living in the Past" folks who don't want ANY change, they want everyone to go home and leave them in the 50's and 60's, even though their families came here from somewhere too.
Once this project is done, they will be so proud to show it to their visitors, and meet there for special events
But they can whine now, and feel good about themselves.

Your statement is not accurate. We could have known what he majority wanted but we were denied a vote that would have given us the numbers. I would venture to say that since the two newest council members were against the park destruction, that the majority of voters did not want the park.

Your own opinion: Good, we don't need your negative mojo in Cda. I will spend twice as much downtown, to make up for your decision to not shop downtown.
You won't be missed, but boy oh boy will you be missing out.

Voxpop.. Boohoo.. And concerned are all three unhappy people with nothing to do but complain about everything. They hate seeing others flourish.. They have positive actions because they feed on negative. It's sad to see people erode to this point.

Yes indeed how 'sad to see it go'. This symbol of freedom that once stood as this communities testimony to our values and commitments is now gone. The ceremony was beautiful and respectful, just as Councilman Kennedy and our Mayor promised at last weeks council meeting.

But wait, there was no ceremony. Looks like the city and the citizens got lied to again. And now the new symbol will one of deceit and lack of respect for both freedom and the democratic will of the people - McEuen Park.

So everything the tree stood for is cut down and forgotten. What a shame why do you 4 have to destroy everything? I'm glad I live just beyond the line of having to put up with you! (Neighbor city)

The majority of the citizens want the park. Majority rules. This park improvements is a good thing. History will prove that. Move to Bonners ferry if you're for no growth or progress.

Yes, Flash, the "good citizens" do. The crabby's don't.
Don't worry, be happy, the new memorial is going to be so much nicer than a shabby little circle around the base of that tree.

Anytime a beautiful tree (especially one with so much meaning) gets cut down it's sad to see it go. However this is the start of a truly beautiful makeover for the McEuen Field area. Once completed this whole area is going to be absolutely beautiful. I can't wait. This is a big win for CDA!

WAY TO GO AGAIN CDA PRESS.

Why not tell the WHOLE story. There was supposed to be a celebration decommissioning of the Freedom Tree that represented our Veterans and POW's. I guess NOTHING will stand in the way of the FAB4' and their stakeholder friends to profit.

    DISGUSTING!
