NAMPA (AP) — A petition supported by Idaho grocers and a nonprofit advocacy group seeks to stagger the distribution of food stamp benefits.

Grocers have complained to state lawmakers that they've been swamped by food-stamp recipients on the first day of every month. However, legislation allowing state officials to stagger the distribution of these federal benefits stalled in the Idaho Legislature earlier this year.

A petition now circulating with support from grocers and the group, Idaho Interfaith Roundtable Against Hunger, calls on Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter for a fix.

State officials estimate 234,000 Idahoans are now receiving food stamps. Grocers told lawmakers earlier this year that the long lines, sometimes in the wee morning hours, have caused some people to abandon their carts in the aisles, forcing $1 million in food to go to waste.

    Help me out here!

People who are receiving food stamps (funded by people who earn money by working, and are forced to give it up to others), are so busy and possibly impatient, that they actually leave food carts full of food in grocery stores? Seriously?!!!

Those on stamps are that disrespectful of FREE food they claim they need?

Since 2008, the number of Idaho recipient's on food stamps has tripled. My guess is, nationwide that trend is consistent.

Maybe it's the people who actually PAY for their own groceries who are sick of waiting in line behind the food stamp recipients. Ever think of that!???

If employers would hire and pay a living wage people can afford to feed themselves on their incomes! making single digits an hour even at a 39.hr job a week stagered over 2 pay periods does not get you very far as you can not see what you may earn in a month hard to plan a buget so you go on what you don't have a need assistance. most employers are jerks for being this way. mine makes me just about live at work and get introuble if life happends and you devide the time and miss a day that was your day off anyway. working does suck eaither way i can not wait to retire! never choose a right to work state to end your working years you feel as if you are working all over again and not getting far. Deal with it people and just be glad you can buy some foods to feed your familys sounds like the store needs more people working on the busy times what a concept.

Maybe Barry and Moochelle Obama could help at the grocery store. It's the least he could do since it's his regulations and policies that are rapidly growing what's becoming known as Comrade Obama's Food Stamp Nation...

The food stamp income and asset based verification system is a joke! It promotes careless spending and poor financial decision making. That part of the system needs anoverhaul.... As for the busy times on the 1st day of the month; staff a little better.
