POST FALLS - A Post Falls man suffered undisclosed injuries when the pickup he was driving was struck by a train Sunday morning.

Christopher R. Meagher, 29, was northbound on Spokane Street near Prairie Falls Golf Course when he failed to yield at a railroad crossing to a westbound Union Pacific train, the Idaho State Police said.

The train struck the right side of Meagher's 2000 Chevy Silverado. The pickup came to rest on the northwest side of the tracks, the ISP reported.

The accident was reported at 11:31 a.m.

Meagher was not transported from the scene by an ambulance, the ISP said.

Torrie Kelley and Tami Grant, who live just around the corner, stood waiting for the train to clear the intersection in the early afternoon.

They had seen the truck towed, and Kelley described the truck as "mangled."

He said he sees drivers run the stop sign by the tracks all the time.

"I'm surprised this is the first time I've seen (an accident); there are so many times I've seen people run the stop sign," Kelley said.

OMGosh Concerned , Never said it wasn't the driver's responsiblity. If you could comprehend my post, it basically is saying , the insensitive comments are just rude. Not once have I said it isn't the drivers responsibility to look both ways, BU,T accidents do happen. But it doesn't give the people permission on this forum to give stupid remarks about the injuries or death of those who were in the accident. Ya know quit trying to put words in my mouth. Do you really think I am as stupid as you look? I don't.

Meidaho, no the crossing does not have flashing lights or arms or sounds. It is a basic stop. For which the young woman that was killed in Rathdrum neglected to fully do. The one in postfalls I am not sure, She came to a rolling stop and then proceeded. I would say she must of been running late and just wasn't careful enough. It is a very very sat situtation no matter . Losing a loved one, should never to be heckled or disrespected . Some on this forum seem to neglect that fact.

    meidaho,

That does not matter one bit. The LAW states right in the Idaho drivers handbook that vehicles must "STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN" then yield the right of way to the train if there is one. Vehicle drivers fault. Period. End of story.

Question did this RR crossing have any of the red flashing indicator lights and or the ding-ding-ding bell?

Okayyy...first of all, for the record, I do yield/stop, look both ways a half a dozen times or so, I do feel it's MY responsibility to get back home to my family alive...I don't need someone else to do it for me. And to run a stop sign at a rr crossing...yup that is very stupid.
With that being said, what's going to happen more than likely is that there will be something, don't know what, but something will be put there to warn people of an oncoming train, why? because each time a tax payer gets creamed by a train (which has been happening alot lately) it's a paycut to city and government, and when you start reaching into their pocket and pulling out $$ something will be done about it. It's true, you can't fix stupid, but it's out there, it's everywhere, liberals will try to fix it though, they believe just because someone is a stupid idiot that should not mean he/she has to die because of it, so it might take a couple more Darwins to get there, but trust me it will happen, the gubbament will take care of us....er them.

OMGosh meanie, READ your DANG hand book. You are about to cross train tracks, and what do you want, the train to stop? Stupid is as stupid does.. It "IS" the driver responsibility. A word that you are OBVIOUSLY not familiar with.

I am not trying to be insensitive to anybody here. However - I am trying drive a large spike into everybody - be careful at RR crossings. The same thing applies at all road intersections - you do not just blindly drive through an intersection without looking to make sure it is safe.
Would you say I was insensitive if this driver hit a person in a crosswalk? It was just pure luck that nobody else was in the accident.

Once again those can be so insensitive about others. I hope to those who have this ugly attitude never have to go throught such grief or pain. I wonder if you would say such mean and nasty things to your own loved ones. Maybe you would, you have shown us many times you do not have a pulse. You just sit there in your lazy boy chairs waiting to pounce on the unfortunate. Does it boost your ego? Does it make you feel more superior? You must be pretty small and pathetic to prey on those who have been through so much. I see it all the time on here, the same people . If it is someone that is having finacial problems to those who have horrible accidents , you have a sensless comment. Shame to you ....

    Surgeon General Warning:
Smoking a Locomotive is hazardous to your health

You think a your warning on the side of each train car, would help? Probably not........they have to stop long enough to read it. STOP, R/R, Lights, Bells, Arms, Whistles are all to long of a message for these people to understand.

    But thanks for the laugh.

I think this would be more effective and just as true, Weld a Chevy Volt to the push Guard of each train and put this on the side of the engine.

(I wonder what the Surgeon General of the United States would have to say about this railroad mishap?)

Maybe it would be; Smoking a Locomotive is hazardous to your health.

ancientemplar: Good quote...but it isn't from Larry the Cable Guy, it's from one of the other "Blue Collar" comedians, Ron White:

When will the railroads do something to stop the accidents? I think I learned when I was about 4...LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING THE STREET. If we have to tell you specifically that this also applies to railroad crossings then, yep, ancientemplar..."stupid is forever" - to finish the Ron White quote.

I don't think you should blame the railroad. Like the cable guy said, "you can't fix stupid."

    Whadda ya say, Tulkas?

When is Bridging the Valley going to be done so accidents like this can stop?

UP needs to abandon this line already and jump on the BNSF tracks like they said they would. The UP line is nothing but a nuisance and always having accidents.

"Meagher was not transported from the scene by an ambulance, the ISP said."

Clarification, please. This seems an odd statement. If he was not transported from the scene by ambulance, what was he transported by?

You know – those trains are sneaky. They hide behind bushes and railroad crossing signs so that you can’t see them. They wait for an unsuspecting car to cross the train tracks and wammo – they jump out and run over your car.
Come on people – they are big and noisy and illuminated with bright lights on the front. The only way to get hit by one of these is that you have to get on the tracks in front of it – and you would have to totally disregard all the RR warnings signs.
