The City of Coeur d'Alene has placed an employee in its Finance Department on administrative leave and asked the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and Kootenai County Prosecutor to investigate the possibility that funds have been embezzled.

The city is not naming the employee now, nor does it know how much money has gone missing. But officials believe the amount is "in the thousands of dollars" and that the transactions involve wire transfers and a federal bank, which could bring the Secret Service into the investigation.

The Press will have a story in Tuesday's print editions. — Mike Patrick

"...He represents LCDC only, and not the city...

And who recommended and appointed the LCDC commissioners? They DON'T represent the city of Coeur d'Alene and its residents?

That's a pathetic cop out, but whatever you say, dude...you're beginning to look like the biggest brown noser I've ever had to endure on a message board.

That's not correct, Floorist. Mr. Berns was not appointed by the city. He was hired by the LCDC Board and is under contract to them only. He represents LCDC only, and not the city. The bottom line is this issue has nothing whatsoever to do with urban renewal, LCDC or Mr. Berns.

    Technically, Mr. Austin...

Tony Berns is appointed by the city, represents the city and draws a $120,000-a-year salary...plus bennies...

...and does his books in pencil...

    CHEERS
If I'm not mistaken, the county embezzlement went to Bonner County and the proxy case went to the liberal Latah county.

It will be interesting to see if the prosecutor's office will outsource this case or if there is someone on that staff who can be impartial and do the job of prosecuting for the county. If the case hits too close to home (again) Barry will have to make the decision. Hopefully he can prove to the citizens he puts more trust in to his own employees. He may have to farm it out to Bonner county like the recent forged proxy case that involved his good buddies.

CC, if you are referring to Tony Berns, he is not a city employee and never has been.

I think it should say, a city employee, JUST ONE THOUGH, gets caught. Just think of the possibilities with tony's penciled in books. ;-)
