COEUR d’ALENE — A Rathdrum police officer was killed Saturday in an off-duty vehicle crash north of Newport, Wash.

Officer Jonathan Franco, 27, died after the motorcycle he was driving struck the rear of a 1996 Plymouth Voyager van driven by Ronald Sumner of Spokane.

Washington State Patrol is investigating the crash that occurred as both vehicles were traveling west near milepost 415, four miles south of Cusick in Pend Oreille County. The patrol report states Sumner’s vehicle was struck by Franco’s motorcycle after Sumner’s vehicle slowed for an injured deer in the road. Debris from the motorcycle struck a third vehicle traveling east on the highway.

“Jonathan was very personable, interacting very well with the community and especially with children,” wrote Rathdrum Police Chief Kevin Fuhr, in a statement released Sunday. “Jonathan was active in his church, was an avid gun collector, enjoyed traveling and riding his motorcycle.”

Franco was hired by the Rathdrum Police Department in 2006 and served as a patrol officer.

I found it difficult to buy a generic american weigh scale but then I visited a site and bought scales of high quality along with a set of free batteries.

And a huge thank you to everyone for prayers and support since the accident...Considering the circumstances, his memorial service could not have gone any better. Its coming up on 9 months since we lost Jonny, and grief is turning out to be a drawn out process, but God is so faithful and has done amazing things because of the life Jonny lived. Again, thank you so much.

I was a personal close friend of Jonathan's, and he had no gang affiliation. Also, he didn't hit a police car, I believe the report says it was a minivan. Police didnt show up till later. Jonny was an awesome police officer at Rathdrum PD, and an amazing friend. Any investigations or research on his life only reaffirm these facts.

I think that a few criminal checks will be very useful in this situation. I don't understand how the motorcycle couldn't have seen the police car. The driver of the motorcycle should be investigated to see if he has any gang affiliation.

Your article is extremely impressive. I never considered that it was feasible to accomplish something like that until after I looked over your post. You certainly gave a great perception on exactly how this whole process works. I will make sure to return for more advice. Thanks

I am so sad to hear of Officer Jonathan Franco's passing. He was a customer of mine @ my barber shop and I always enjoyed his visits. We always had very nice conversations. I loved to ask him about the goings on in Rathdrum and he had no problem telling me or my customers about the goings on. He was a delight to know and speak too. I am soo saddened. My deepest condolences to his family and friends and also to the Rathdrum P.D. It was a pleasure to know you Jonathan!! Thanks for being a real great guy!! RIP.

Your fellow law enforcement officers in Georgia have you and your family in our prayers. We thank you for your service to the City of Rathdrum Police Department. Rest in Peace your shift has been completed.

On Saturday the world lost a treasure but God's kingdom gained a rare jewel! Having known Jonathan for about 20 years it was heartbreaking to hear of his death. Growing up with our sons, he was a sunbeam wherever he went--always a smile and an infectious laugh! He loved life and lived it to glorify his Lord and Saviour. Jonathan was looked up to by many young people even though he wasn't much older than they but his character demanded respect and admiration.
We will miss you, Jonathan, but you will always have a special place in our hearts--you will not be forgotten.

Very sad. Officer Franco was a nice guy and in my experience, he acted as a true professional law enforcement officer. It is a loss for the Rathdrum PD. RIP Officer Franco.
