HAYDEN - Two men were hurt Friday when they tried to use exploding target material to start a fire at a shooting pit.

Dylan E. Dodd, 20, of Coeur d'Alene, was treated for serious injuries at Kootenai Medical Center and was listed in stable condition. Alex L. Encinas, 23, of Athol, was treated at KMC.

According to a Kootenai County Sheriff's Office press release, the two men and another friend, Dane E. Anderson, 20, of Coeur d'Alene, had spent most of the day at the Hayden Creek shooting pit, northeast of Hayden, and were trying to start a fire around 5 p.m.

"Having trouble starting the fire, Dodd and Encinas decided to use some of their leftover exploding target material as an accelerant," the release said. "When Dodd neared the fire with the material, which was contained in a bag, the material exploded, severely injuring Dodd's right hand. Encinas also suffered lower body injuries."

Anderson was not injured.

The men drove to a convenience store, where they were met by an ambulance.

Investigators said the material involved in the incident was an unidentified exploding target material purchased at a local sporting goods store.

"GM, you & the liberals FIRST answer to ANY violence is to ban guns"

Never said that, you made it that up. Would be helpful if you based your arguments on what was said instead of your standard rant.

GM, you & the liberals FIRST answer to ANY violence is to ban guns, and take them away from law abiding citizens.
It's knee jerk, and wrong, but you conern yourselves not ONE BIT with the RIGHTS of others, becasue you simply have an AGENDA, and that's much more important than anyone else's rights.

Not that easy Joe. Need you to try to understand that the world is more complicated than that. While it's true that I think that we should take a look at gun laws, don't think that gun laws are the answer to everything. For example, don't think that smart gun laws alone will stop the Conservative attempts to merge church and state.

    logi-cal, here's how it works.
For GM, everythign has to do with "guns". They are his answer to everything; if there's evil in society, the "guns" did it, if someone blew their nose wrong; that's right, it was "GUNS" again....

Need to rethink allowing Liberals in America.

Re: "It's just plain cruel to associate somebody's random accidental injury with a personal ideological beef"

Perhaps. It also seems to make sense to capture a lesson learned to prevent further injury. I'm hopeful that this logic has benefit for both sides of the gun control issue.

In yet another case... to blame the conservatives for the lack of gun control, or blame the liberals for this kids assumed lack of intelligence makes me question the human element in both "sides".

It's just plain cruel to associate somebody's random accidental injury with a personal ideological beef. In either direction.

Both parties are complicit in the cultural decline of this country. Leaving us all caught up in the muck and the mire. If we continue to believe in their campaign slogans, we'll never have a chance.

We need to get together and hold our politicians accountable and then worry about all the divisive issues.

Re: "It clearly expresses a failure of the liberal education system"

They don't teach gun safety in schools.

Golden Mean, this incident has nothing to do with guns. It clearly expresses a failure of the liberal education system. I believe these young men failed English, Science, and Math. First, the could not read the warning labels. Next, if they could read the label they were never taught to "understand" what they read. Then, after not reading and/or not understanding what they read, they clearly did not grasp the physics of volitile substances and soft matter. Which ultimately lead to putting 2 and 2 together and not getting 4. If you don't like guns, move to Mexico, they have very strict gun laws, and look how little gun violence they have.

Speaking of stereotypes, there's another group who can't seem to understand that there is a difference between make safe and control.

Isn't it TYPICAL for libs like GM to chime in on "gun control"?

Time to rethink commons sense & outlaw liberals in America.

    Second Amendment...

    1) Right to bear arms
    2) Right to blow your arms off?

I don't think that was the intent. Time to re-think gun laws and training requirements.

I am not poking fun at these two. They are both lucky to be alive. And I am very happy that they are not dead. Those targets really explode when you shoot them. They are not toys. They are explosives. The forest service does not like them much from what I have heard. I wonder what they think about it...

Sure these guys pulled a bobo, I'm sure they will be more careful in the future, with all the people making these dumb remarks don't really help, experience is the best teacher and besides all the finger pointers, I am sure you folks get real joy out of making a big deal out of some blunder someone made, but should you ever get careless and do something as stupid or worse then you may not be so willing to shoot your big mouth off, course as intelligent as you are, you no doubt will never do anything like that. Laugh away boys, but should you ever be in the lime-lite then we all get to hee haw you too.

I am amazed at the responses from men who apparently were never young and never made a poor decision. Unfortunately for Dylan, he lost his hand. The poor decision that he made to throw a small plastic bag that had originally had exploding targets and that had residue in it, into a smoldering fire, is now a decision that will visibly be before him for the rest of his life. Thank you God that a man nearby who had been shooting targets, knew how to tie a tourniquet and that Alex, though injured, drove his friend while keeping him awake and encouraging him, to meet the ambulance who took Dylan to the hospital. Now Dylan has another painful surgery tomorrow and I'm sure that his family needs your prayers and not your condemnation. I have personally made many mistakes throughout my life that I was spared from a life-changing injury. And I'm fairly sure, all of you who have been so quickly to condemn are far from making perfect decisions, especially when you were young men and thought you were indestructible.

Man that's a hard lesson to learn. Reminds me of the old men who go to home depot and buy a table saw and they think that they can now be a professional wood worker. Ever notice how many fingers they are missing?

What these young men needed was instruction. It's too bad the majority of young men never had a father or grand dad to show them the way. But hey ya all got nice cars and big houses and all kinds of money. Problem is you can't buy experience.

Hope ya guys heal up okay. I am glad that you guys did not get killed...

I would put that as a redneck, Idaho don't have no corner of the market on misguided people, most of these North Idaho genius came from California, life was better in the days before we got invaded by all these immigrants, even some migrant workers have more sense than some that invaded our space.

Where did stealing come into this story? These guys definitely weren't thinking clearly, if at all - - but it doesn't follow that any of them are thieves.

What a pair of morons, Dodd or Anderson should not be in possession of any firearms, if Dodd messed his hand up it will make it harder for him to steal anything.

" "When Dodd neared the fire with the material,..."

Sounds like the fire was already going.

Package is probably labeled "keep away from flame".
