COEUR d’ALENE — Dan Gookin appears to be ready to run for mayor.

The second-year city councilman sent a letter to media outlets stating he’s ready to announce his intention to vie for the mayor’s seat come November.

The letter didn’t say he will for sure run for mayor, only that he will announce whether he will or not.

So, would he call everyone out to the Third Street boat launch at 10 a.m. Friday to announce he’s not running? He told The Press today he didn’t want to “pre-announce his announcement.”

But, he added, “I will not be wasting your time. I wouldn’t do that. That would be a joke, but I don’t want to pre-announce this announcement.”

Gookin had strong words for the current administration favoring the McEuen Park project. In an interview today, he said the city “raided” funds, “inconvenienced” businesses with the project, and said the whole thing was “rammed through,” which was “arrogant and disrespectful.”

Choosing the boat launch as the site for his announcement is definitely a symbolic gesture, he said.

Should Gookin run, and lose, he would not have to surrender his city council seat because his term will not have expired by November. That’s according to the Association of Idaho Cities.

For Editor Mike Patrick: Please edit Tom Hasslinger's future articles as he covers the upcoming City Council election. Be sure he is reporting just the news without any slant, any bias. His articles should read as if my brother back in Illinois could read them and not know which side Tom (the paper?) is taking.

This article is the perfect example; you can bet that if Mike Kennedy had sent the same announcement to your paper, there is no way Tom would have written a piece such as this!

Bully? The man stood up to the bullies (Bloem and Co.), so how does that make him a bully?

"His answer is the only (answer)..."? The whole sordid McEuen debacle was engineered by a few people who believed their answer was the only answer. You have a twisted sense of history or are are fatally ill-informed.

Gookin has shown himself to be pretty magnanimous and independent and has voted against Adams on occasion. Adams has been an antagonist on occasion but Gookin has taken a stand when warranted. That's not antagonism or bullying.

Huckleberries was dead wrong when they blamed the recall on Right Wing RRs. The recall wasn't about politics exactly. It was about conflicts of interest, ramming projects through with no buy-in from the people who live here, taking an out of towner's plan and ramming it down people's throats. The recallers were right wing, left wing, and independents.
The recallers won't elect someone who is too closely affiliated with the Powers that Be OR the RRs. They want a person who is middle of the road, but mostly one who can think for himself or herself, consider the interests of everyone in CdA, not be part of the conflict of interest groups, and reign in the LCDC. Whether it's a Repub, Demo or Indep, or a Yellow Bird doesn't matter.
The main thing that stuck in everyone's craw was the conflict of interest thing. That stunk and still stinks.

Nice post DC, spot on brother.

Dan is an antagonist who does not understand the art of compromise for the greater good. It’s his way or the highway. No constructive alternatives. He’s a bully and thinks his answer is the only one; everyone else is either guilty of malfeasance or participating for their own gain. The man also has no sense of what it takes to run a business, or about the personal sacrifices needed and the importance of team building.

Can’t wait for the Big Announcement! Can’t you see it? Dan side by side with Sharon, Brent, Mary, Steve and Joe Idaho

This is very interesting! Dave Chamberlain threatens Mr. Gookin, Randy Myers ( a Huckleberry blog puppet) agrees. I agree that the article was framed to make Mr. Gookin look silly. Frankly, I believe that the $20 million plus debacle known as McEuen and its arrogant supporters, is platform enough for anyone to run on. To be against this boondoggle is clearly to be for the citizens of CDA. What a concept that is.
Good luck Dan, should you choose to run. It would be a real travesty to have a Bloem hand picked candidate elected.

It sounds like this article was written by Tom Hasslinger---you know the one who supported the McEuen project and kept everyone "informed" each step of the way (with obvious Press bias). The writer of this article obviously did what he could to make things sound bad...when all it sounds like happened is the media was given a letter regarding an announcement to be made by Dan Gookin at 10 on this Friday at the Third Street boat docks. PERIOD The rest of this article was written with obvious Press bias.

Hmm, a 2 year official that has proven to be contentious in a major amount of council decisions running for the highest position in Coeur d'Alene. Backed by and receiving endorsements by a right wing radical political organization that what soundly trounced by more moderate candidates in a contentious School Board Trustee battle.

Dan came in on a single issue in an election year when a lot of voters just had thought they had seen enough from the current council. However, this election will bring the BNI PAC into play and you saw what they did in the last election.

Dan, EVERYTHING you have ever written on this blog or any public statements will be brought to full scrutiny during this election. Your school district fellow PAC-MATES took a drubbing because of the unwise choices and pure political decisions concerning our kids education. The majority of the voters did not vote because their districts had no one running.

If I were you Dan, and you are still thinking about announcing for running, I think maybe a surprise I AM NOT RUNNING might be better for you politically. Ride the pony for awhile before you get on the Bronco. Your current style is not well suited for the job which requires you to deal with each side of the political spectrum. You only vote on tie's.

You will have to show us your Managerial Skill Set. Can you handle dozens of employee's without putting someone down or berating them in public. So far your record shows you don't.

You are gonna have to sell us on your ability to continue the commitment to build a better Coeur d'Alene, and not just do a Strip-it-and-lock-it-down administration.

How silly. I'm going to announce that I'm going to make an announcement. Stop - hold the presses. If you have something to say, just say it, quit playing little kid games.

He obviously needs some PR assistance already. Good luck Dan. You have spoken out both sides of your mouth for a long time.

I sure hope candidates have a little more depth than to run on anti-McEuen.

i'm disappointed in the political speak of, “I will not be wasting your time. I wouldn’t do that. That would be a joke, but I don’t want to pre-announce this announcement.” Gah! Doubletalk is not attractive in a candidate.

Gookin and Brannon both running will split the RR votes. I think the Recallers are a broader group and more unpredictable except they will want an anti-McEuen Project candidate. . I am waiting to see who else runs. So far I'd vote for Dan.

The fact that he recognizes and acknowledges the arrogance and disrespect of the current regime, speaks volumes. Good riddance to Coeur d'Alene Taliban.

He has demonstrated that he can be independent and respectful. Good luck, sir.

Better he should distance himself from the myopic downtown business special interests.

If he wants a real shot at this, he better start distancing himself from the OpenCDA and the RR crowds right now.
