POST FALLS - A letter signed by Sen. Bob Nonini that arrived in some Post Falls voters' mailboxes a few days before Tuesday's school board races is stirring a post-election debate.

Nonini said he was caught off guard when he was the only lawmaker who had a signature on the letter. It was dated May 17 and in support of candidates Carol Goodman and Glorie Ward, both endorsed by the Reagan Republicans and election winners.

"There was a misunderstanding behind the letter," he said, adding that he didn't send the letter. Nonini said, had he known he would have been the only legislator to have his signature on the letter, he would have given it a second thought as to whether to allow to have it sent.

However, Nonini said he signed off on the content in the letter. It says "From the desk of Senator Bob Nonini" on the top.

Jeff Ward, treasurer of the Republican group and Glorie's husband, said he did the footwork on the letter in collaboration with the candidates.

The letter was critical of incumbent Julie Hunt, who narrowly lost to Goodman, and Dave Paul, Ward's opponent who was seeking a return to the board. Hunt and Paul were not specifically named in the letter, but it's obvious who it targets.

"I have had many opportunities to meet with (Hunt and Paul) over the years and one thing has become apparent," it states. "Their only concern is the teachers' union and keeping the union members happy without any regard for the residents funding Post Falls public education."

Jeff Ward and Goodman said Rep. Frank Henderson was also sought to sign the letter, but they left his name off it because he wasn't able to review the letter due to his wife and Post Falls City Council member Betty Ann Henderson being in the hospital due to a hernia surgery.

"We changed all the 'we's' to 'I's,'" Goodman said, adding that there were no major changes from the draft.

Hunt said she believes the letter was a key factor in her not getting re-elected. She lost to Goodman by 11 votes.

"I think it absolutely made a difference," she said. "If I received it, why wouldn't I have believed it? It came from a trusted elected official."

But Hunt believes the letter was filled with lies and "very hurtful."

"I've never even been introduced to (Nonini)," Hunt said. "We should be able to trust people to give us the truth."

She said union members asked her how they can help her in her campaign, but they've never approached her regarding teacher negotiations.

"When we have negotiations everybody is on the same page; there's no conflict," she said.

But that, Hunt said, is different than being influenced by the teachers.

Goodman said it's hard to say how much of an impact the letter had on the result because some politicians are not well-liked and it could have worked against her in some cases, too. She believes knocking on doors made the biggest difference in the election.

Hunt said Reagan Republican-endorsed candidates tried to make it a partisan election, using the party on literature, even though there's no Rs or Ds on the ballot. Hunt said she has been labeled a Democrat, even though she's a Republican.

She said she didn't use the party on her campaign literature because serving is "about the kids" and not politics.

"I didn't want to stoop to using (a party affiliation)," she said. "The fact that I lost is OK, but my hope is that our programs will be protected and kids don't suffer."

Paul agreed.

"There is a reason these are non-partisan elections and they should stay that way," he said. "I am not a sore loser and accept the fact that I got beat, but I am deeply sorry that politics played such an important part of this non-partisan election."

Hunt said if some board members are out of touch with helping give students opportunities and being fiscally responsible as some claim, she wonders why nearly $3 million in scholarships are being awarded this year in Post Falls and the district has one of the lowest supplemental levy rates in the state.

Nonini said that, based on his legislative experience, he believes the Post Falls candidates who came up short are aligned with the teacher union.

He said when boards are in control of setting budgets worth tens of millions dollars, candidates bring their own fiscal and party philosophies to the table. They also have to be open to differing opinions, he said.

"Politics is a full-contact sport, even in non-partisan elections," he said. "I appreciate Carol and Glorie asking me to sign a letter of endorsement. I support what they do."

I am ashamed of Nonini and Ward. If these were decent people they would step down from their positions that were won on a lie. I think the people in Post Falls should have a recall election as soon as possible. GET THESE PEOPLE OUT NOW!!!!!

I guess we'll see in the next city election if the taxpayers in Cd'A that talk real big will change the makeup of this city council. If not I guess it's just lip service..

Nonini seems to be anti school, anti teacher, anti education. CdA got out the vote to get rid of some of these people. N Idaho could clean up if it just gets the reasonable people who care about the truth and care about schools out to vote. CdA did it. Hopefully we can attract some good legislative candidates and clean house next election.

I have stated for years or at least tried to in my own misguided way that Government for the People, by the People, requires People to vote. Pick up a paper, talk to a neighbor, in between the two jobs your working to keep a roof over your head and food on the table go to a meeting, learn then vote. Spikey is 100% right...

Miketeague, until people become tired with slimy politicians and go out to vote, this will continue ad infinitum! Time after time, this type of behavior occurs and yet the same politicians are re-elected due to voter apathy. Railing against them here does no good. Voting is the only answer for one such as Nonini.

Nonini has always marched in lockstep with looney Luna and his efforts to destroy the Idaho educational system in order to pay back online education companies for backing (Luna) him. And to back (Luna) him in a run for the governors office. As has already been pointed out, Idaho is 49th our of 50 in education. That is really appalling. And no, you can't blame the teachers entirely. Of course there are some ineffectual teachers, but the majority are good and work for peanuts, while doing an important and often unappreciated job. Bobby Nonini has been caught red handed in a quintessential political dirty trick move. The Reagan Republicans scream foul at the drop of a hat. Then they turn around and pull the same tricks. Poor Ronnie is probably spinning in his grave at the misuse of his name and principals.

I didn’t know, I didn’t do it, I’m sorry, are you getting as tired as I am of these oh so common politician’s statements? You Know you can expect this kind of underhanded tactics from Nonini and friends, but I’m sorry to say this is not just a slimy republican thing, there are just as many slimy democrats, I can think of a couple on the CDA city council that are great at bait and switch and outright lies. There was a time when true Democrats and true Republicans would debate the issues and put forth their solutions and let the public decide, but people like Nonini and the R.R.s have decided that truth is their enemy and our communities suffer because of them.

Wow! So many things wrong here!

Let's start with HIPPA, how DARE the Press or anyone report on health issues/concerns of another and print it for the entire Internet and local population to read!

Next, my daughter wants a plaque that says, "I didn't realize no one else wasn't going to sign/on board, go along with..." If a Senator can use this as his excuse, then why not the rest of the nation!

Next, how dare anyone ANYONE change the body of a letter written from someone else, "We changed all of the WE'S to I'S". I do not agree with this entire debacle of Nonini's but come Reagan Republicans! You just do not change someone else's written word to meet your agenda! Really! Were you NOT paying attention to Mitt Romney and his video taped address on the less desireable people of our nation?

"Give them all enough rope" I truly hope the sheep who fell in line and voted this REAGAN REPUBLICAN line smell the stench rolling off of them, like we smell coming off of these people. Shame on you all!

Jeff Ward, in collaboration with the candidates, wrote the letter. If this isn't politics at it's most shameful worse than what is? Goodman and Ward (Jeff's wife) won an election based on a deception. Great example for the children. What other lies are they did they use? Were all of their campaign material lies? They ought to step down immediately.

Nonini is a liar and despicable man, many already know this as they have watched his games in the legislature. So many foolish Post Falls residents. Yes, the Regan Repubs tried the same thing in CDA by Sims, Gookin, and others but the lies and bias in the letter were so blatant it was seen through. As I have said before, the Regan Repubs are well known for their continual lies to get elected.

Nonini seems to cover all his bases with conflicting comments ......"Had he known he would have been the only legislator to have his signature on the letter, he would have given it a second thought as to whether to allow to have it sent" anddddddd "I appreciate Carole and Gloria asking me to sign a letter of endorsement. I support what they do". Well done, Bob, well done:)

Julie Hunt a republican? Hmmmmm, why was she labeled quite the opposite? And Ms Hunt says she's never been introduced to Nonini and Nonini says quite the opposite? Who's telling the truth here?

Do you hate people that are not republican tea baggers HardWork???? You post is really sickening. I feel sorry for those that have to live with you. Control his wife??? That is what people of your ilk do! Do you hate anyone from California? Where are you really from? I am guessing not here!! Maybe Utah! The point is Nonini did not tell the truth and sent a letter that was not truthful...now, he is back peddling...typical!!!! Keep your dam politics and religion out of our schools!!!!!!!! You want that...BUILD YOUR OWN or home school!!!!!

"...full contact sport." Sad, sad times for our children. Our small town, neighbor-helping-neighbor area has officially been hijacked by people in power spewing lies. Jeff Ward, what are you so angry or fearful about? Our schools in Kootenai County are not the liberal California schools with which you are familiar. The majority of our teachers are Republican, conservative, church members. If you want to protect our schools from going downhill, find a way to save the families that are falling apart. If you want to control your wife on the school board, first learn the most important lesson of leadership: you lead alongside people, not by holding a metamorphical shotgun to their heads.

To paraphrase Twain, "Lies, damm lies, and politicians." Glad his sort of subterfuge didn't work in Cda, although it was tried by both Seddon and Regan.

OK this one is really easy. Bob said in the letter that he met Hunt on numerous occasions. Hunt says she never met Bob. Which is it? Bob, have you not met Hunt? If that is the case, why does your letter say you did on numerous occasions? Does a "full contact sport" include being deceitful?

Oh, that is right, you don't support teachers!!! We get it now Nonini. We all saw how your boy Otter and all you republican tea bags treated our teachers. You want our kids uneducated, so they can work for minimum or below wages...cleaning toilets, mowing your lawn, maids, waiters...etc.!

Idaho ...#49 in nation for education of our children!!!!!!

Keep up the good work republicans and Nonini!!!!
