Middle school students in Coeur d'Alene are viewing film footage of their own community this morning, as part of a classroom lesson on racism.

The Idaho Public Television special, "The Color of Conscience," is being shown to Lakes Magnet Middle School students. Following the showing of the film, students in all the school's advisory classes will participate in  teacher-led followup discussions on racism.

Produced by Idaho Public Television host, Marcia Franklin, "The Color of Conscience" first aired in May.

The documentary examines the past 30 years of the modern human rights movement in Idaho, and chronicles the efforts of local human rights activists who in 1981 founded the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations.

Task force members responded to acts of violence by members of the Aryan Nations by paving the way for a 2002 civil lawsuit that resulted in the disbanding of the group's Hayden headquarters.

Victims of a shooting committed by guards of the Aryan Nations compound were awarded a multi-million dollar settlement that bankrupted the group.

Following the verdict, philanthropist Gregg Carr purchased the property and the buildings were cleared from the land.

The film includes archival footage from the years leading up to the lawsuit, as well as footage from the first time task members walked the cleared grounds of the former compound.

"The Color of Conscience" also examines some of the current human rights issues in Idaho, such as gay rights, immigrant rights and hate crimes.

The segment of the film that deals with gays, lesbians and transgenders has been edited out of the version of the film that will be viewed by the middle school students.

The entire film can be viewed online at http://idahoptv.org/productions/specials/colorofconscience/">Idaho Public Television's website.

Interesting that most young people I have met that identify themselves as gay or lesbian discovered this at middle school age.

If Humanist had his way there'd be equine reproduction films shown in 2nd grade under the guise of animal-husbandry.

It is inappropriate (and probably illegal) to present these concepts in public schools without a fair hearing from the other side. A good lawyer could mop up the floor with the school. No school should take a one-sided political position on anything. No school can afford to take this risk.

The other side is not pro-racist or anti-diversity. The other side is the one that cautions about abuses by the human rights activists. It was informational mistakes from human rights activists that caused the many killings at Waco and nearby Ruby Ridge. There have been many other excesses but these two are easily the most famous. It is the excesses of people like Bill Wassmuth and Morris Dees that caused so very much anguish over bringing opposites together.

Everybody means well but when that well meaning causes blind killings, we have not meant well enough.

There seem to be some errors of fact in this story: Was it not the Northwest Coalition against Malicious Harassment rather than the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations that caused so much grief for the Reverend Butler so long ago? Was there not also an outright theft at the time? And what was the name of Butler's organization? Remember; it was not, "Aryan Nations." Quick now. What was the proper name?

Everyone should know this because the concept of of an aryan nation is an important footnote in history. It reveals how ideas and positions evolved in the first quarter of the last century. Study of the concept shows how difficult it was and is for every racial and ethnic group to understand every other. It shows how innocent many of the presuppositions were. If we do not understand these things honestly, we are doomed to repeat. If we do not understand these fundamental things, we are ill prepared to develop the next generation of just concepts.

If we want to end racism and its allies, we must be scrupulous about honesty. Otherwise, everything falls apart and we fail immensely. Lying is just plain impractical.

Lakes Middle School teacher Dave Eubanks tells us they decided to delete the section regarding gay rights issues out of respect for the parents and guardians of the students. Those are sensitive subjects for middle school children.
Dave also told The Press that although the historic events involving the Aryan Nations took place right in the childrens' back yard, most were unaware of that history.

Because not all Nazis were perverts. They didn't want to give perverts a racist name.
