A 27-year-old man was injured early this morning when the truck he was driving hit a tree, rolled and ended up submerged in the Coeur d'Alene River near Cataldo.
Jesse A. Story, of Cataldo, was able to free himself from the vehicle and swim to safety, reports the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department.
KC Sheriff's deputies and Shoshone County Fire/Rescue personnel responded to the scene at 2:25 a.m.
Investigators believe Story fell asleep while driving the 1974 Ford F250 pickup northbound on CCC Road, about a quarter-mile north of E. Canyon Road. The truck left the road, collided with the tree, rolled and went into the river.
Story was transported to Shoshone Medical Center by a private vehicle and later transported to Kootenai Medical Center by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries.
Story remains at KMC in fair condition.
Merwin’s Towing also responded to the crash scene and removed the vehicle from the river.
At this time, alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.
An investigation continues.
