Time for a collective groan: The desperate attempt to reach $150,000 for Press Christmas for All by 5 p.m. Wednesday fell short.

Time for a collective cheer: Anonymous in Athol is giving us all high praise, encouragement, and a little more time.

Anonymous, one of the program's most generous donors going back many years, had challenged the community to reach the $150,000 mark by end of day Wednesday. His intent was to then give $10,000 to put the fundraising drive within striking distance of its overall goal of $225,000 by Christmas Day.

With the program running well behind last year's record pace for giving, more than $35,000 was needed on Wednesday. By the time the doors were locked at 5 p.m., $13,207.11 had come in. That's a good day for donations, but not enough to reach the challenge mark. Right now, the fundraising drive has brought in $127,983, which is $22,017 short of the $150,000 challenge mark and $97,017 short of the goal.

Take heart, said Anonymous in Athol.

"I applaud the community's great effort on Wednesday," he said. "I know how difficult these times are financially. Therefore, I'm extending the deadline to 5 p.m. Thursday. That will ensure each person in our community has the opportunity to give and to ensure we reach our goal and meet the challenge."

A in A's $10,000 will kick in the minute $150,000 is reached. But even then, the program has quite a ways to go to ensure that all requests from Kootenai County residents are fulfilled in time for Christmas.

With just three days left to donate, please mail your check today or bring it by the Press offices at 201 Second St., Coeur d'Alene, 83814. The building is on the northwest corner of Second and Lakeside.

Donate by phone

Press Christmas for All received dozens of credit card donations made over the phone Wednesday. To do so, call (208) 664-8176. Please be patient. Phones are ringing off the hook, which is good news to the many needy in our community.

There are people who actually donate quite a lot. What would you say about people who managed to donate a car? They can surely be very generous. Maybe others should try and follow such examples.

I find it very sad that about every years the multitude of duplicated efforts done by so many charity groups still do not unit and cut costs. Then stop raising the bar every year when the country is sinking down. These people sound and act so much like our lousy politicians.... going down the tubes they spend more and more like nothing is going on.

Now they look forward to the games they play with carrots and sticks. Pay this... I will match with that. Whoops fell short...I am nice enough now to grant you some more time to pay up...or else .Dude either through down the 10K or Stick It.. Stop with the games. Same for the Press. Be thankful anyone gave you a dime during these times.

Most of your choices that you print about are enough to turn me away... Christmas trees and presents are so non important in life when people are truly suffer daily. Before, during and long after Christmas. Basic beans, rice and veggies are needed more than anything else.

It must stroke A's ego to play this game. To paraphrase Yoda, "give or give not, there is no deadline." Oh yeah, and how much hard cash does the Cda Resort give to this fund? The usual zip no doubt.
