COEUR d'ALENE - The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office won't be doing concealed weapons permit applications and renewals anymore on Monday.

The day has just gotten to be too busy.

Lt. Stu Miller said a high volume of general paperwork on Mondays from busy weekend activities coupled with continued growth of concealed weapons permit applications forced the change.

"We had so much stuff from the weekends coming in," Miller said. "We just don't have the manpower" to handle the double deluge.

The change was announced Tuesday.

Miller said the office has been handling up to 50 concealed weapons permit applications and renewals, combined, each day.

The growth in Kootenai County speaks for itself.

In 2011, from Jan. 1 to June 11, there were 429 concealed weapons permit applications and renewals.

For the same period in 2012, there were 1,042. And this year there were 1,808, Miller said.

The new days and times for permits are:

From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday, the sheriff's office will take pictures and issue approved permits for civilians and retired law enforcement officers.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, the sheriff's office will process new permit applications and complete fingerprinting.

A concealed weapons permit costs $59, and a renewal is $40. The fees are paid in cash at the time of fingerprinting.

The public applies for them at the sheriff's office at 5500 N. Government Way.

Why would you pay to carry your gun........... seems like another form of registration.

Open carry already is allowed and should suffice. Concealed weapons should be illegal.
