HAYDEN - The Kootenai Humane Society has more than 100 cats in cages, and more than 50 dogs in kennels at its building at the end of Ramsey Road.

Feeding, caring and finding homes for all those animals costs plenty. That's why Tails at Twilight is critical to the nonprofit's operations.

The goal is $100,000 to help the no-kill shelter carry out its mission of "saving lives and improving quality of life for all the animals in need at KHS."

"This is our biggest fundraiser of the year," said KHS director Dori Peck. "This is a huge opportunity for us to raise much-needed funds."

Already, more than 300 tickets have been sold - but plenty more are available for the event scheduled 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at The Golf Club at Black Rock.

It will include auctions, music, beverages and hors d'oeuvres. There will also be a parade of dogs and cats available for adoption.

Tickets are $75, or two for $125.

Peck, KHS director since April, said it's "kitten season," so the shelter has around 110 cats and kittens that need homes. Fifty-one dogs also need owners.

"We're full," said Peck, who previously worked at the Spokane Humane Society as development and outreach director.

It costs $85 to adopt a dog, $25 for an adult cat, and $50 for kittens. All animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and have had their vaccinations.

In years past, Tails at Twilight has raised around $70,000 to benefit KHS animals and programs. Peck believes they could top that, especially since this is the first time Black Rock has opened it doors for an event like this.

"It's a unique opportunity to come out and see it," she said of the club about 15 miles south of Coeur d'Alene off U.S. 95 on Rockford Bay Road.

KHS depends entirely on grants, fundraisers, income from adoptions, its thrift stores and donations.

For tickets, call Pete Chichester, 819-3034. They will also be available at the door.

I had a breeder talk to me once bragging about Her dogs (I told her her dog was cute) and how much $$$ she makes and how many litters she trys to get each year. Then she tells me she had to give away her favorite dog I asked why would you give your favorite dog away? She told me she was not breeding her anymore. (I guess she did not want to waste money feeding a dog that was not going to bring puppy money) I cornered her conversation wise told her how I felt she tried to justify and was in denial that her dogs are only for money making not pets or family members. I would never buy a breeder dog and always adopt from a shelter. Breeder dogs have huge genetic disorders that comes with the over breeding and the physical breakdown of the mother dog. I shop at petco and donate. I shop at petco because they help shelters and do not sell puppy mill dogs or kitties they do not sell any puppies or kitties just the ones from the shelter for adoption.

You are correct, Just. They lost lots of support. I cannot understand why this organization can run in such secrecy behind closed doors. Their 501c3 designation requires open elections, conflict of interest statements to be signed, scheduled meetings, and minutes taken at board meetings to name a few requirements. I belong to another organization that has the same designation and we have to run with total transparency.
Also, how in the world do they get away with no elections of board members. Totally against the IRS requirements.

If you shop at the Hayden Petco at all you can donate at the cash register. They have a little scanner that just adds your donation to your bil. It's just a little at a time but it adds up for them over the year. I try to give $5 every time I go in.

I have adopted several great dogs from shelters, including purebreds. It amazes me that people can abandon family members like that. If you are in the market for a dog, please don't go to a breeder. And please spay/neuter.

Unfortunately the last director did major damage to KHS! Lots of people turned away from this organization because of her actions. Hopefully things will change and people will start to donate to them again. Its a great organization for a very good cause.

We just donated more cages for transport to the group and we also donate funds from time to time. Animals can not help themselves much... as opposed to humans.
