MOSCOW - In the battle of the high school heavyweight champions from Washington and Idaho on the football field, it was the team from Washington that landed the first punch.
And before the Coeur d'Alene Vikings could land one - the Skyline Spartans of Sammamish, Wash., had already delivered a knockout blow Saturday night.
Skyline quarterback Max Browne, who verbally committed to USC last spring, threw for 308 yards and six touchdowns in the first half as the Spartans rolled past the Vikings 71-20 in the final game of the Idaho Football Classic at the Kibbie Dome.
The loss snaps a 24-game win streak by the Vikings (3-1) dating back to the 2010 season.
Skyline - which won the state 4A title last year - jumped out to a 29-0 lead before the Vikings finally scored on a touchdown pass from Gunnar Amos to Chase Blakely.
"They was as advertised," Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos said. "He (Browne) played some good football. They're a better football team than we are right now."
Browne completed 18 passes to eight different receivers in the first half.
"We knew they were a great program," Browne said of Coeur d'Alene. "To win 24 straight games is a big accomplishment. We knew we had to come and play hard, but knew that if we played our game, we were tough to stop."
"Really proud of how we executed," Skyline coach Matt Taylor said. "They had some bad breaks and uncharacteristic turnovers and we were able to pounce on them."
Coeur d'Alene was plagued with dropped passes and bad snaps in the first half.
"They're a better team than us right now," Amos said. "They took advantage of our mistakes."
Coeur d'Alene (3-1) will return to Viking Stadium on Friday to host Highland of Pocatello in their homecoming game.
"It was rough," Blakely said. "On defense, we need to wrap up a little better. It was a great experience. They're a hell of a team."
"As long as our kids respond like I think they're going to respond, we'll be ok," Amos said. "Obviously we'll take a lot from this. It doesn't get any easier next week, so we've got to get better."
