COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen did Ernie Banks one better and played three on Sunday - and won all three.

The Lums beat the Missoula Mavericks 6-2 in a game shortened to seven innings from its originally scheduled nine. Pete Hoffman pitched a complete game and Chad Nyquist hit a solo homer for Coeur d'Alene.

The Lums then swept Trail (British Columbia) 14-4 and 16-13 in North Idaho League play. Grant Curtis pitched a complete game in the opener.

No other highlights were available.

Coeur d'Alene (39-8, 15-1 NIL) plays host to Missoula in a nine-inning game today at 1, then hosts the class AA Area A (district) tournament starting Friday at McEuen Field.

St. Maries 3-5

ST. MARIES - Hunter Bailey went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs as Coeur d'Alene won the opener of the class A North Idaho League doubleheader. Jacob McKnight was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Colton Gray was 2 for 3 and Dan Bryant and Derek Griffin each drove in two runs. Brett Wingham struck out six in a complete game.

In the second game, Colby Kennedy struck out six in six innings of relief after starting pitcher Stephen Babich took a line drive off the chest and had to leave the game. Loggers coach Mike Bacon said Babich was expected to be OK.

The Loggers (20-22, 10-13 NIL) open class A Area A (district) tournament play Thursday in St. Maries.
