COEUR d'ALENE - Chris Sarbaugh, a former Gonzaga Prep basketball standout from Spokane, will transfer from Gonzaga University to North Idaho College, Cardinal men's basketball coach Jared Phay announced Tuesday.
Sarbaugh, a 6-foot-3 guard, can play all three guard spots on the floor, according to Phay. After redshirting last season, he will play this year at NIC and transfer with three years of eligibility remaining.
"We've been talking to him for a couple of weeks," Phay said. "He's 6-2, but can play multiple positions from the 1, 2 or 3. He's a proven winner and leader out there - and we're really excited to get him."
Sarbaugh led the Bullpups to a state 4A championship as a senior and was named the Seattle Times Player of the Year.
"It's not too far away from home for him and he wanted the opportunity to play right away," Phay said. "He just wanted a place to play right away and we're right in his back yard."
Also, volunteer assistant coach Jared Johnson has left the program to take an assistant coaching job at Division II Texas A&M-International in Laredo, Texas.
Thane Jackson, a student assistant at Portland State, will replace Johnson.
"It was just an opportunity for him to get a paying job," said Phay of Johnson. "They (the players) are all starting to get in next week and we're ready to get to work."
