Benzel wins

tourney in playoff

WORLEY - Ryan Benzel of Lynnwood, Wash., won a sudden-death playoff over Jason Pitt of Chewelah and Corey Prugh of Manito in Spokane to claim the Pacific Northwest PGA Professional Championship on Thursday at Circling Raven Golf Club.

Each shot 14-under 202.

The top eight qualifiers earned spots to the 46th National Championship at Sunriver (Ore.) Resort on June 23-26, 2013.

The top local finisher was Darin Vaughan of Twin Lakes Village, who tied for 15th with a 73-69-70-212. Trevor Fox from The Golf Club at Black Rock tied for 19th with a 68-73-73-214.

BMX racing offered

at Cherry Hill track

COEUR d'ALENE - Free BMX racing for all ages is being offered at the Cherry Hill BMX track for any new racer for the remainder of the year.

Races are every Saturday through Oct. 27. Registration is from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by racing.

WSU, Wyoming announce

football series starting in '15

PULLMAN - Washington State and Wyoming will play a home-and-home football series beginning in 2015, the schools announced.

The first meeting is scheduled for Sept. 12, 2015, at Martin Stadium, the second in Laramie, Wyo, on Sept. 1, 2018.

WSU leads the series 3-2 over the Cowboys, with all the games coming from 1962-1990. Wyoming beat WSU 34-13 in 1990 at Martin Stadium. The Cougars own a 2-0 mark when playing in Laramie, and are 1-2 in Pullman.
