Ronald J. Young, 82

Ronald J. Young, 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at the Renaissance Assisted Living Home for the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. Ron was born in Missoula, Mont., as the only child of Clarence (Cy) Young and Gladys Young and grew up on the National Bison Range at Moiese, Mont. He graduated high school from Gonzaga Preparatory in Spokane, Wash., in 1953 and received his Forestry degree from the University of Montana in 1962. Ron met the love of his life, Beverly, in chemistry class at UM and were married in 1954 in Missoula and celebrated their 63rd anniversary this past October. During those years Ron and Beverly were blessed with three children and gave their all to raising a wonderful family.

Ron started his U.S. Forest Service career at Seeley Lake, Mont., and was promoted in 1965 to Sandpoint, Idaho, and in 1971 to Sullivan Lake Ranger District in Metaline Falls, Wash., then to the Supervisor’s Office in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 1980. He retired November, 1990.

Ron worked several jobs through the years before graduating from UM. He joined the Lions Club at Seely Lake and was instrumental in developing a ski area on the Rich Ranch land. He continued his membership in Metaline Falls, serving a term as president. At Sullivan Lake, he learned to fly his own plane and got his private pilot license and learned aerobatics in Coeur d’Alene. A highlight was flying with a group of friends to Taxco, Mexico.

The family began avidly skiing at Schweitzer Ski Basin and getting the kids into ski racing. His daughter earned a ski scholarship to Washighton State University and twice qualified for Nationals, so the 200 mile round trips for nine years were rewarded. Ron had many opportunities to use his carpentry skills, building a ski cabin at Sandpoint and remodeling several homes for Beverly and the kids. Hunting and fishing were something he began at an early age and continued for several years. He especially enjoyed taking his sons on a great trip to Montana to experience hunting there. When they moved to Coeur d’Alene, Ron and Beverly took up golfing and enjoyed meeting new friends, league golfing, and group excursions to many different courses in the Northwest and Canada. Retirement gave Ron and Beverly the opportunity to travel in a RV from Alaska to Nova Scotia to Key West to California.

Ron was a faithful friend to all who knew him. He had great integrity, humor, did his best to fulfill his obligations, and was a gentleman. He is survived by children Dan (Diana) living in Colton, Wash., Jean Stephan (Todd) living in San Diego, Calif., and David (Mona) living in Lafayette, Colo., as well as six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

A memorial Mass will be help at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 625 E. Haycraft Ave. Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with a luncheon to follow. Those wishing to sign Ron’s guestbook or leave their thoughts online can visit yatesfuneralhomes.com
