PREP BASKETBALL: Pakootas paces Lakeside girls in North Star opener

HARRISON FLATS — Tommia Pakootas scored a team-high 14 points as the visiting Lakeside Knights pulled away late to beat the Kootenai Warriors 47-41 in a North Star League game Tuesday night.

“They outrebounded us and were able to get a lot of second-chance points,” Kootenai coach Doug Napierala said. “It was a really good game and we were able to tie it up with a little over five minutes to go, but they were able to use some ball control and pulled away late.”

Kaili Gentry had 21 points, six steals and six rebounds, Courtney Lamb 10 points and three steals and Madison Napierala four assists and four points for Kootenai (1-2, 0-1 NSL), which hosts Kendrick on Thursday.

Tara Allen scored 12 points for Lakeside (5-2, 2-0), which hosts Clark Fork on Thursday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Taryn Soumas scored 15 points, and the visiting Tigers shut out the Vikings in the third quarter, and held the hosts to eight points in the second half of the nonleague game at Elmer Jordan Court.

“Defensively we played well against them, but we could not score,” Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Nicole Symons said. “Timberlake came out and played tough, played physical, never quit, and outrebounded us. They came out fighting, and we didn’t respond.”

Brooke Jessen added 13 points, Shelby Starr 11 for Timberlake (5-1), which is idle until hosting Flathead of Kalispell, Mont., on Dec. 15.

Freshman Emma Whiteman scored 12 points for Coeur d’Alene (1-2), which travels to North Central on Friday.

CHATTAROY, Wash. — Colton Counts scored 15 points for the Tigers, who hit five 3-pointers in the second half to push past the Rams in a nonleague game.

“We got into a little foul trouble in the second quarter, but the kids came out ready to play in the third quarter and made a run back into the game,” said Timberlake coach Michael Scott, whose team outscored Riverside 18-2 in the third quarter. “We pressed them a bit and shot the ball really well in the second half.”

Jordan Hardy scored 14 points for Timberlake (1-3), which hosts St. Maries tonight at 7.
