COEUR d’ALENE — The state high school hockey tournament comes to North Idaho for the first time when the Frontier Ice Arena on Seltice Way plays host to 12 teams from throughout the state in games Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The local team entered is the Cristeros, a name which comes from the Cristeros rebellion in Mexico. A majority of the Cristeros players come from Immaculate Conception Academy in Post Falls. A few attend Post Falls High, and some go to Our Lady of Victory in Post Falls.

Cristeros players include Luigi Dippolito, Matt Hoffman, Mark Pierce, Matt Finlay, Isadore Finlay, Marcel Reznowski, Bear Hughes, Corbin Cockerill, Brennan Metzger, Alex DeTar, Tom Goggin, Joe Darakjy, Nick Eloe, Joe Reuter, Ike Finaly, Oliver Bumb and Alex Eloe. Coaches are Vince Hughes and Paul Eloe.

The tourney is conducted by the Idaho Amateur Hockey Association.

The combined Eagle/Rocky Mountain high team won last year’s state title, beating Cristeros 5-4 in the final for its second straight state title. Boise/Timberline won their league playoff and is considered the favorite this year.

The 12 teams are divided into four three-team divisions, where each will play two matches.

On Friday, Cristeros is scheduled to play Skyline at 7 a.m. and the Boise Knights at 8 p.m.

The top two teams in each division will advance to the quarterfinals later Saturday.

Sunday’s semifinals are scheduled for 7 and 8:30 a.m., followed by the third-place match at 10:15.
