ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Dr. Wayne M. Fichter: Does Chiropractic promote overall wellness?

Print Article

Since 1895, chiropractors have known that adjustments are good for your overall health. With millions of satisfied patients, what do they know that the rest of us may not?

Science tells us that the nervous system is the one system in our body that has a direct effect on every other body system. This is due in part to the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system consists of more than 100 billion nerve cells that run throughout the body (like wires in your house) making connections with the brain, other parts of the body and often with each other. Nerves send sensory information from every part of the body to the brain. Once there, the brain analyzes this information to determine what exactly the body needs to maintain a healthy state. The health of this system is essential to the good health of the rest of the body.

Chiropractors have recognized that misalignment of the spine (called vertebral subluxation) can disrupt proper nervous system function often resulting in irritation and inflammation. “Dr. Chung Ha Suh, Ph.D., and his colleagues at the Biomechanics Department of the University of Colorado in the 1970s performed a study that showed that just 10mmHG pressure (roughly the same as the weight as a dime) could cause a 40-60 percent decrease in nerve impulses.”

Is it acceptable to lose 60 percent of anything that is important to you? Of course not. The nervous system is the most important organ because it controls everything (and I mean everything) from how you feel to how your organs function. How will your heart (or any organ) function at 60 percent? Can decreased function lead to unwanted symptoms? It is often subtle, but over time the body begins to lose the ability to adapt to increased stress or lose the ability to handle daily activity, which leads to a decreased state of health. This is when we may begin to rely on medication to correct the problem.

Sixty percent loss of anything is huge. What percentage of loss is acceptable to your health? How about your family? As your child is growing and developing, would it be OK for them to only get 75 percent of the proper nerve function?

That is why a spinal evaluation is vital for detection of underlying spinal issues. Chiropractors have over 4,500 hours of training in detecting and correcting vertebral subluxations. They are the only health care professionals specifically trained to do this.

As a profession, the core philosophy is about the optimization of the brain-body connection, the whole body health and wellness. Don’t wait another day or year suffering with spinal issues. Add chiropractic to your health care team and schedule your annual wellness check.
