Joseph Moran has made spelling history.
The Inland Northwest Christian Homeschool seventh-grader from Hayden is the first North Idaho contestant to advance to the finals in the 15 years The Press has sponsored the North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee and sent the winner to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
"Joseph got both his on-stage words correct and feels good about the written test," his mom, Sally Moran, said Wednesday.
Sally relayed word that Joseph made the finals via text message late in the afternoon, along with a photo of her smiling son on stage with the 49 other finalists. She also sent a picture of the medal he earned.
He will continue his stellar spelling live on ESPN2 this morning at 7 a.m.
Joseph, who is competing in the Scripps Bee for the third consecutive time, said he was excited to be advancing in the competition.
"I've dreamed about this for a long time," he said. "I'm happy that all the prayers and hard work are finally paying off."
