Signup deadlines near for

coed, men's rec softball

COEUR d'ALENE - Friday at 5 p.m. is the deadline to register teams for fall men's and coed softball leagues through the Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department.

Cost is $500 per team, for a 10-game season. The season starts the week of Aug. 27 and runs through early October.

Signups will be accepted at the rec department at City Hall, 710 E. Mullan Ave., or by calling 769-2249.

Signups under way for

Rathdrum adult leagues

Rathdrum Parks and Recreation is offering adult sports leagues in softball and Frisbee this fall.

Cost for adult softball is $200 per team and $20 per individual), and the Frisbee league is $80 per team.

Both leagues begin the second week of September and run for six weeks.

Registration forms can be found at the Rathdrum Parks and Recreation office, 7851 Main Street in Rathdrum, and online at xpressrec.com.

Ex-Cd'A resident Mather heading

into his high school hall of fame

Joe Mather, who was born in Sandpoint and grew up in Coeur d'Alene before moving to Arizona prior to his freshman year in high school, is scheduled to be inducted into the Mountain Pointe High Hall of Fame in Aug. 31.

Mather, who currently plays for the Chicago Cubs, graduated from Mountain Pointe as the school's all-time leader in home runs and RBIs, both of which records have since been broken.

As a senior he hit .478 with 17 home runs and 43 RBIs and was named second-team All-USA by the USA Today newspaper.

Mather was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 104th overall pick in the 2001 draft.

Vandals picked second

in WAC volleyball

DENVER - The Idaho volleyball team was picked second in the 2012 Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll, and two Vandals were selected to the preseason All-WAC team, the conference announced.

Idaho senior middle blocker Alex Sele and junior outside hitter Allison (Walker) Baker were selected to the preseason All-WAC team. Sele was a second-team All-WAC pick in 2011 after averaging 1.77 kills and 1.08 blocks per game while hitting .283 for the season. Baker, a two-time first-team All-WAC selection, led the WAC in conference matches with 4.31 kills per game and hit .212.

WAC newcomer UTSA was picked third, just ahead of Utah State and Texas State. Denver was picked fifth, San Jose State sixth, and UT Arlington, Seattle U and Louisiana Tech rounded out the poll.

New Mexico State sophomore Meredith Hays was selected as the preseason Player of the Year.
