COEUR d'ALENE — Veteran Michael Quinn of the Pappy Boyington Detachment No. 966 was recently presented with The Chapel of Four Chaplains' Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award.

The award recognizes people whose actions represent the legacy of two ministers, a priest and a rabbi who gave their life jackets to four GIs so they could survive the sinking of the USS Dorchester in 1943. The four chaplains perished as the ship sank.

Quinn is a former Coeur d' Alene Marine Corps League Detachment commandant and current Detachment senior vice commandant

The award was presented by National Senior Vice Commandant T.J. Morgan at the Detachment's regular meeting in April in Coeur d'Alene.

"The Chapel of Four Chaplains' Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award is given to people who have made a lifetime commitment to selfless service and societal advancement," a press release said. "The award recognizes deeds and actions on behalf of others, regardless of race, ethnicity or faith. The award also recognizes people whose leadership has brought their actions to national or international attention, and whose life epitomizes the spirit of the sacrifice of the Four Chaplains."
