POST FALLS — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen sure brought the lumber — or at least the modern-day, composite version — in their doubleheader sweep over Prairie on Monday at Post Falls High School.

Piling up 20 runs in each game, the Lums trailed 7-6 in the nightcap before rallying for a 20-7 road win in AA Legion baseball.

A two-out triple by Jake Brown scored teammate Breyson Coppess to start Cd’A’s six-run fifth inning, tying the game at 7. Two errors, some walks and an RBI single by Jackson Scherr — who had six hits in the doubleheader — put the visiting Lums ahead for good.

In the sixth, two-run singles from Riley Smith, Landen Thompson and Dylan Blum helped Cd’A score eight runs and finish off the Cardinals.

“Our approaches at the plate were excellent today,” Cd’A coach Erik Karns said. “We did a good job squaring up the ball, moving baserunners along and getting hits when we needed them.

“But I was most pleased with our resiliency, with how we rallied after making some errors and a rough start (in Game 2).”

Prairie had 10 hits in the nightcap, four of them in a six-run fourth inning. A two-run double from Matt Flemming and RBI single from Harrison Reid put the hosts ahead 7-6.

It was all Coeur d’Alene in the opener, with Brandon Gay earning a complete-game victory for the Lums, allowing just five hits and two runs over six innings. He struck out four.

Cd’A led 5-2 through five innings before scoring 15 runs in the sixth to put the game away.

“Brandon was very effective,” Karns said. “He threw strikes, held them in check and we played good defense behind him.”

Blum went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and four RBIs for Cd’A in the opener; Thompson had two doubles and 2 RBIs; and Brown had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Brown scored eight times in the doubleheader.

Flemming hit a solo home run and Tanner McCliment-Call had an RBI double for Prairie.

Both teams continue AA North Idaho League play with doubleheaders in Lewiston this week. The Lums (11-4-1 overall, 6-0 in league) play in Lewiston today, and the Cardinals (4-11-1) visit Harris Field on Wednesday.
